M1 Vs M1 Pro & M1 Max Apples New MacBook Pro Chips Explained

The new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors for the MacBook Pro are clearly faster than Apple’s first-generation M1, but how much more performance do they bring? Apple needed more raw speed and graphics capabilities for its larger 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops and the M1 Pro and Max provide that with plenty to spare. The latest Apple Silicon chips move the iPhone and Mac-maker another step closer to full independence from Intel and AMD.

At its Worldwide Developers Conference in 2020, the company announced that it would be transitioning to Apple Silicon, computer processors of its own design, and away from Intel within two years. That means 2022 is the year when the move will be completed if all goes according to plan. With the release of the M1 Pro MacBook Pro, Apple has demonstrated it has a viable solution and even when it comes to its more powerful computers.

Apple says its new M1 Pro and M1 Max feature a CPU that is up to 70-percent faster than the M1 chip. It has 10 processing cores versus the 8 in the previous generation M1 chip. With 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores, versus the 4 and 4 architecture of the M1, Apple’s new processors put the focus on speed, while retaining the ability to shift to low-power when appropriate. The GPU has expanded even more dramatically, doubling and quadrupling the number of cores to 16 for the M1 Pro and 32 for the M1 Max. That makes the M1 Pro up to twice as fast, and the M1 Max up to four times as fast on graphics processing tasks. Neural processing keeps the same number of cores but improves by up to three times, due to code optimizations and memory improvements.

Why You Need An M1 Pro Or Max MacBook Pro

Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro models are powerful laptops that sip power gently, providing enough performance to run the toughest workflows. They offer greater overall processing speed, doubling the memory interface, delivering up to 200 gigabytes per second of bandwidth to handle the most data-intensive tasks, while offering up to 64 gigabytes of unified memory that can be accessed by the CPU, GPU, and NPU. That’s three times the bandwidth of the M1 and up to four times the memory. The chip has nearly twice as many transistors as the M1 and that extra silicon makes a difference.

The new MacBook Pro laptops also have mini-LED displays, thinner bezels, improved FaceTime camera and better speakers. Apple’s M1 Pro and M1 Max bring a surprising amount of extra power to the already potent M1 chip, but this is just the beginning and more powerful Apple Silicon is expected to come in 2022 when the Mac Pro is due to be updated. For now, users can enjoy the increased performance and graphics power of the M1 Pro and Max MacBook Pro models.
