MacBook Pro M1 Max & Pro Crashing While Viewing HDR Videos Per Reports

The saga of usage hiccups with Apple’s latest “pro” laptops is not over yet, as multiple users have now reported that watching HDR videos on YouTube crashes the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models powered by the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. The two machines hit the shelves just over two weeks ago, but so far, the journey hasn’t been exactly smooth for buyers.

First, it was the weird notch issue on these refreshed MacBook Pro models that hid menu bar items and led to some cursor behavior. Thankfully, Apple quickly released a workaround that allowed users to hide the notch on a per-app basis. The release of macOS Monterey wasn’t smooth either, as some users who installed it started experiencing issues with USB hubs.

Now, it appears that watching HDR content on YouTube freezes the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro and also reboots the machines. First spotted on the Macrumors forum, affected users mention that playing 4K HDR YouTube videos shuts down their new Mac machine and reboots it. A few users suggest that when they exit from full-screen mode and start scrolling, the MacBook Pro crashes. The issue has been replicated on both Chrome and Safari, implying that it isn’t due to some bug associated with Google or Apple’s browser. It is also unclear if the problem arises due to the calibration or syncing issues related to the new min-LED display, TrueTone, and the ProMotion technologies.

Powerful Machines, Powerful Issues

As per complaints on the official Apple Discussions forum, scrolling down while playing a 4K HDR video on the new Macbook Pro models powered by the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips freezes the UI and forces the machine on a reboot route. The issue has been replicated on models with both the new chips and configurations with 16GB and 32GB of RAM. It doesn’t appear to be linked to a processor or memory limitation either. A handful of users on Reddit have also reported experiencing a crash-and-reboot problem on their respective MacBook Pro. A couple of complaints also describe issues while connected to an external monitor where it either flickers or keeps going back to the log-in screen.

Some of the affected users suggest that it is due to kernel panic. Interestingly, Apple has a support page that describes kernel panic and suggests that the most likely culprit is faulty software but damaged or incompatible hardware might trigger it as well. Apple suggests remedial steps such as restarting the Mac in Safe Mode, uninstalling third-party plug-ins or enhancement software, disconnecting peripherals, or running the Apple Diagnostics program to pinpoint the exact problem plaguing the Mac. Unfortunately, Apple is yet to acknowledge the issue and release a fix, as it did for macOS Monterey bricking some older Macs.
