Magic: The Gathering has revealed a new crossover with, of all things, The Walking Dead. This announcement is just one of many new updates shared for Magic: The Gathering today. Earlier, fans got a first look at Magic’s main set lineup for 2021, which includes a return to fan-favorite horror setting Innistrad, a new Viking-themed plane, and a wizarding school.

This new crossover will be coming in the form of a Secret Lair set. These are limited runs of small bundles containing hyper-exclusive reprints of Magic cards, with new art to fit the given theme. These themes can be quite outlandish, as exemplified by an early Secret Lair called “OMG KITTIES,” which featured five cat-themed cards and two creature tokens with adorable new art. The Secret Lair series isn’t a stranger to odd crossovers, either; to coincide with the release of Magic’s Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set, Wizards of the Coast released a Secret Lair called the Godzilla Lands, which saw the game’s five basic lands reprinted with Godzilla on them. This tied in to a larger promotion that saw various cards from Ikoria redesigned to represent iconic kaiju like Mothra, Ghidorah, and, of course, Godzilla.

On Magic: The Gathering’s Twitter account earlier today, Wizards unveiled a new crossover Secret Lair set to release sometime in the future. This set will combine Magic with The Walking Dead, a media franchise that began with a series of comic books and was brought further into the public eye by a major television series on AMC. All the Twitter post showed was a brief glimpse of the Walking Dead logo, along with an AMC watermark to indicate that the set will relate more to the show than to anything else in the Walking Dead franchise.

One last piece of Secret Lair news: We have an exciting collaboration with AMC’s “The Walking Dead”! More info soon. pic.twitter.com/WjJdIsQpeS

It’s still unclear what exactly this crossover will look like, though Wizards does assure fans that there will be “more info soon.” Magic: The Gathering has had a long, proud history of Zombie creatures; it’s one of the strongest creature types to build a deck around. With that in mind, fans can probably expect the Walking Dead Secret Lair to package a few classic, powerful zombie cards, complete with fancy new art reflecting the classic horror show.

It should be quite jarring to see a more modern setting like that of The Walking Dead appear on Magic cards; generally the trading card game remains solely in the high fantasy setting, and designers have previously stated their firm intent not to depict modern appliances and weapons like guns on their cards, even in more science fiction inspired sets like Mirrodin or Kaladesh. The two properties might not have much in common aside from zombies, but that should be more than enough to make for a very interesting Secret Lair when Magic: The Gathering gets its Walking Dead crossover sometime soon.
