Wizards of the Coast welcomes Magic: The Gathering’s latest expansion, Innistrad: Crimson Vow, with a jaw-dropping cinematic trailer.
Posted to YouTube, the trailer focuses on what is assumed to be a bride and groom in the midst of preparing for their wedding day. The pair, visibly nervous, are adorned in all manner of opulent clothes before being ushered into a gigantic ballroom. Surrounded by elongated tables, rose petals pouring from an urn mounted to the ceiling, something is clearly awry. As the bride hesitates, two masked figures pull her forward using magic, lifting the couple up onto a sacrificial table. It becomes apparent the ceremony isn’t for the two loves but instead for Olivia Voldaren, a powerful vampire noblewoman who hungers for fresh meat.
Innistrad: Crimson Vow is the next major set coming to Magic: The Gathering and will act as a direct sequel to Midnight Hunt. While the previous expansion focused on the rise of werewolves on the spooky plane, this new chapter will take place during the course of an extravagant vampire wedding. Now that Innistrad has been plunged into an eternal night, Olivia Voldaren seeks to elevate her power further by marrying into the Makrov bloodline, consolidating her position. Legendary vampire planeswalker Sorin is tasked with intervening, thwarting her plan to assume complete control over Innistrad.
Magic: The Gathering fans can expect plenty of stylish new cards and mechanics, some of which iterate on those introduced in Midnight Hunt. Daybound and Nightbound return, allowing players to switch between the two and change certain cards’ forms, triggering all kinds of unique effects. Blood tokens are a thematic new addition; functioning as artifacts, they can be sacrificed by tapping one mana, granting the player the ability to discard a card from their hand while drawing a replacement.
Training is another new mechanic which grants a creature that attacks alongside a stronger ally a +1/+1 bonus, sometimes triggering further benefits. Cleave is arguably the most unique new keyword, allowing players that meet certain criteria to remove bracketed phrases from the card’s text, resulting in a powerful effect.
Innistrad: Crimson Vow launches for Magic: The Gathering Arena on Nov. 11 alongside the official prerelease. The full tabletop expansion will be arriving just a few days later on Nov. 19.
