Magnetos Secret Superpower Could Explain His Darkest Moments

Warning: Spoilers for X-Men #5!

When it comes to X-Men villains, Marvel’s Master of Magnetism, Magneto, is one of the most villainous, and now a secret superpower has just revealed why that might be. Magneto seeing along the electromagnetic spectrum is one thing, but using this overlooked power to essentially strip his enemies down to usable metallic “parts” is something else entirely.

As seen in X-Men #5, by Gerry Duggan and Javier Pena & Ze Carlos, fans getting a possible explanation for Max Eisenhardt aka Magneto’s darkest villain moments actually comes from understanding the secret power of his mutant daughter, Lorna Dane aka Polaris, instead. Attacked by a resurgent group of lethal X-Men baddies known as the Reavers, the X-Men are taken out at the beginning of this issue, leaving Polaris on her lonesome to beat them down.

Using the unconscious body of Laura Kinney aka Wolverine as a weapon via her mastery over metal, Polaris does her best to fight back against enemies that are stacked with weapons on every limb. Temporarily blinded by one of their attacks, Polaris is forced to utilize a secret power on the Reavers that not only allows her to eke out a decisive win but simultaneously draws attention to why her father, Magneto, might utilize his similar power to justify his bad behavior.

Admitting she underestimated the Reavers and their blinding tactic, Polaris says that she doesn’t “just see the world with my eyes,” and as the following panel shows, that’s no exaggeration. Continuing to say, “…I see it on the electromagnetic spectrum. I see the iron in your blood…and the metal fillings in your teeth,” Polaris’ vision of the Reavers is drawn to look like she’s battling green-tinged, human-shaped blobs, with the aforementioned iron in their blood and teeth fillings the only defining visual elements left to see. Going on to rip out the Reavers’ fillings with her metal commanding powers, Polaris’ electromagnetic vision gives fans another solid reason as to why Magneto might look down upon humans as something lesser.

Disliking all of humanity for the travesties he experienced during the Holocaust as well as the way they have generally mistreated mutants over the decades, Magneto has more reasons than most to despise a species that, in his eyes, don’t deserve to live. By revealing that Polaris — and by extension Magneto — have “magnet” vision that further dehumanizes the enemies they face, Magneto essentially perceives people as metallic “parts” that can be used as he sees fit, no doubt linking right into the idea of why he might care even less about humanity than fans think, and why he acts in the terrible ways he’s usually known for.

So while Polaris might be the one who has shown fans the lens she and her father view humans through, Magneto utilizing his electromagnetic vision to justify his darkest moments is something that makes a lot of sense for this X-Men villain. Magneto will probably never truly care for humanity as a whole, and now fans might have another reason as to why.
