Sony is releasing new boxsets of Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movies before the release of No Way Home. The superhero’s current live-action iteration is played by Tom Holland and was introduced in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, officially integrating the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man: No Way Home will be the third of Holland’s solo-outings with director Jon Watts and is set to release wide on December 17.
The friendly neighborhood hero has a complicated history on the silver screen, with audiences becoming so familiar with Peter Parker’s backstory that the MCU could bring him in with Uncle Ben already dead. To the excitement of fans, No Way Home will explore that history via the multiverse storytelling device, having a Doctor Strange-spell-gone-wrong facilitate the return of characters from previous Spidey franchises. Some key villains have already been confirmed, such as Spider-Man 2’s Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Electro (Jamie Foxx), but many have speculated that past versions of the hero will join Holland in taking them down, even amidst the stars’ repeated denials.
In a move that will surely fuel that theory, Digital Spy reports that Sony is releasing brand-new boxsets of both Maguire’s trilogy (2002-07) and Garfield’s duology (2012-14). The films have been remastered in 4K, with the packages including both UHD and standard Blu-ray discs. Though now available for pre-order, the new Spider-Man boxsets officially release on November 8, just one month before No Way Home hits theaters.
This upcoming Spider-Man is one of the most anticipated Marvel films in recent memory, with the No Way Home trailer breaking Endgame’s record to become the most-watched trailer ever. Still, the studio has been slow and controlled with their character reveals. In addition to Doc Ock and Electro, footage of a pumpkin bomb suggests the Green Goblin will make an appearance, though there’s no word yet if it will be Willem Dafoe’s, Dane DeHaan’s, or a new version entirely. The end-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage also showed Tom Hardy’s symbiote-host crossing over from Sony’s universe into Disney’s, and while it’s reasonable to assume Venom joins the No Way Home fray, it remains mysteriously unconfirmed.
While overeager fans will want to jump all over the news of new boxsets as evidence that Maguire and Garfield are making their MCU debuts this December, there are other reasons for Sony to time their release with No Way Home. Multiple Spider-Men or no, Watts’s movie does still include characters from the past franchises, and the company is smart to try and capitalize on the renewed interest in them as a result of the upcoming crossover. Those considering making a purchase will be mulling the higher resolution, but for fans in general, brushing up on Spidey’s film appearances seems like a smart way to prepare for No Way Home.
