Mandalorians Armor Has An Avatar The Last Airbender Easter Egg

The Mandalorian has a subtle Avatar: The Last Airbender Easter egg thanks to the lead bounty hunter’s armor. The first live-action Star Wars show debuted its first season in late 2019, with The Mandalorian touted as the premier piece of original content for Disney+. The eight-episode first season proved to be a massive hit, driving plenty of conversation in the Star Wars community and increasing the Disney+ brand.

The magic of The Mandalorian came from the mind of Jon Favreau, who has directed major blockbusters like Iron Man, The Jungle Book, and The Lion King. He wrote and produced the first season, and might direct an episode in season 2, but Favreau also had some help. Dave Filoni made the jump to live-action after working on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels to produce, write, and direct episodes of The Mandalorian, essentially serving as Favreau’s second in command. Favreau and Filoni included an abundance of references to prior Star Wars canon, but also tied in another project from Filoni’s past.

Before Filoni joined the Star Wars universe, he worked at Nickelodeon on the hit show Avatar: The Last Airbender, which told the story of Aang, the current Avatar and last Airbender, as he tried to defeat the Fire Nation. Aang has a distinct look with his shaved head and blue arrow tattoos on his head and running down his arms. Thanks to Filoni’s involvement in both shows, The Mandalorian included an Easter egg to this design with Din Djarin’s armor. He has blue triangles on the top of gloves that resemble the end of Aang’s arrow tattoos.

Djarin’s armor in The Mandalorian featuring a reference to Avatar: The Last Airbender is a clever way for Filoni to link different parts of his life together. But, this isn’t the first time that a Star Wars property Filoni is involved with made reference to The Last Airbender. During The Clone Wars, Filoni did something similar Appo the clone trooper. After appearing in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Filoni used Appo in The Clone Wars and connected him to Aang’s flying bison Appa. Not only are their names similar, but Filoni added a white arrow to the helmet of Appo to give viewers a visual connection between them.

With Filoni’s continued involvement in The Mandalorian season 2, his habit of including references to Avatar: The Last Airbender could continue. They might not be as permanent as the lead character’s design, but fans should be on the lookout for what else he could include in season 2. The new season of The Mandalorian will arrive on Disney+ in October 2020, and Star Wars fans can now catch a first viewing or refresher of Avatar: The Last Airbender since it is streaming on Netflix.
