Many Saints of Newark What Song Is In Trailer #2

The second trailer for The Many Saints of Newark is set to a new wave version of an old blues song. The upcoming Warner Bros. movie is a prequel to HBO’s hit drama The Sopranos, which premiered in 1999 and became one of the biggest shows on television by the time it ended in 2007. The Sopranos’ surprising finale was thought to be the last time Tony Soprano’s story would be explored, especially after James Gandolfini passed away in 2013.

The Many Saints of Newark is WB and HBO’s attempt to revitalize the story with original creator David Chase and writer Lawrence Konner. It is a prequel focusing on a young Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini’s son Michael, and his upbringing during a crime family power struggle in Newark. This comes as Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola) helps shape Tony into the powerful mob boss audiences know him to be. The Many Saints of Newark is directed by Alan Taylor and also stars Jon Bernthal, Leslie Odom Jr., Corey Stoll, Vera Farmiga, Billy Magnussen, and Ray Liotta.

Ahead of The Many Saints of Newark’s debut in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1, 2021, the second trailer for the Sopranos prequel was released. The trailer is set to the song “Money (That’s What I Want)” by the Flying Lizards. The blues song was originally released in 1959 by Barrett Strong, but the rendition featured in The Many Saints of Newark’s trailer is from the Flying Lizards’ arrangement. Their version of “Money (That’s What I Want)” was released in 1979 and the new wave style propelled it into the Billboard Top 100 chart.

The decision to pair “Money (That’s What I Want)” with The Many Saints of Newark’s trailer is a bit on the nose, but it does speak to the mindset of the characters and those in the mob. The lyrics of the song concentrate on the desire to accumulate money and the idea that it is the only thing in life one really needs. It goes as far as to say that anything money can’t get is of no use. Although Tony Soprano cares about more than just money, the financial benefits of his mob helped enable him to become as powerful as he did, so the importance of money in this trailer is understandable.

Even though “Money (That’s What I Want)” is included in the second trailer for The Many Saints of Newark, that is not a guarantee that it will be in the movie itself. The Flying Lizards’ version of the song was not released yet at the time when the prequel movie takes place in 1967. However, the original rendition by Barrett Strong or The Beatles’ 1963 cover could be heard over the radio at some point. If The Many Saints of Newark wants to include the Flying Lizards’ new wave arrangement, it could still include the song as part of the movie’s soundtrack.
