Mario Actor Charles Martinet Wants To Voice Him As Long As Possible

Legendary voice actor Charles Martinet wants to keep playing Mario for the rest of his life, and fans wouldn’t have it any other way. Having first provided the voice of Nintendo’s iconic plumber mascot in 1992’s Mario Teaches Typing for the PC and gaining mainstream attention after the classic Super Mario 64 in 1996, Martinet’s cheerful laugh and fun catchphrases have become as synonymous with the iconic plumber as his mustache, blue overalls, and Mario’s signature red hat.

Naturally, when Nintendo announced that it was partnering up with Despicable Me studio Illumination to produce an animated Super Mario Bros. film, fans were expecting Charles Martinet to take up the role of Mario once again for his first foray onto the silver screen since the disastrous live-action Super Mario Bros. movie of the early 90s. However, it was later revealed that Guardians Of The Galaxy and Jurassic World star Chris Pratt would be voicing Mario in this new movie, with Charles Martinet lending his voice to several unspecified cameos. But thankfully for both Martinet and fans, he’s not done voicing Mario in the games just yet.

According to Nintendo Life, Charles Martinet revealed that he wants to keep on voicing Mario for as long as he is physically able to. He recently sat down for a Q&A session at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto earlier this weekend, where he was asked how long he would like to continue lending his voice to Nintendo’s most famous character. Martinet answered that he wants to keep playing Mario until he “drops dead,” though he didn’t rule out passing the role down to someone else if he is “no longer capable” of voicing the character himself at some point down the road.

While Chris Pratt is handling the role of Mario on the big screen, fans can look forward to hearing Charles Martinet in Mario Party Superstars, the latest installment of Nintendo’s party minigame series that is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch on October 29. A recent Mario Party Superstars TV spot revealed some of the zany minigames Mario and his colorful supporting cast will be getting into in this new adventure, including eating gigantic pizzas, battling it out on floating mushroom platforms, and trying to avoid creepy Boos as they make their way across the classic Marty Party game board.

Charles Martinet’s Mario voice is iconic among fans who grew up playing Nintendo games from the mid-90s to today, so hearing that he wishes to continue voicing the famous plumber for the foreseeable future is certainly welcome news. After all, Mario is one of gaming’s most beloved and recognizable characters, and a big part of his longevity is the joy and whimsy Charles Martinet brings to every new Mario game.
