As a part of its annual E3 2021 Direct, Nintendo has announced post-launch support for Mario Golf: Super Rush, including free characters and courses coming via DLC. Super Rush is the first new Mario Golf title since 2014’s World Tour and the first console game in the series since 2003’s Toadstool Tour. Developed once again by Camelot, the game adds a Speed Golf mode where multiple players race towards the end of courses simultaneously while dealing with Mario-themed character abilities and other obstacles. There’s also a Golf Adventure mode with role-playing elements where players play as a Mii and face off against other golf students in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario Golf: Super Rush already has an expansive number of Mario characters that have never appeared in the series before. Pauline is hitting the links fresh from her return to the mainline Mario series as the mayor of Super Mario Odyssey’s New Donk City. King Bob-omb, the first boss of Super Mario 64, is also picking up the clubs and joining the league alongside longtime Mario foe Chargin’ Chuck. The courses included with the game also range from Mario-centric locations to more traditional greens.

During Mario Golf: Super Rush’s segment in today’s Nintendo Direct, the publisher promised that golf enthusiasts would have new characters and courses to look forward to following the game’s release on June 25. These courses will seemingly stretch across Super Rush’s various modes, including a more standard golfing experience, Speed Golf, and Battle Golf. The only new course hinted at in the footage shows Mario banking a shot off a building in New Donk City, and the speed pad on the cement green indicates that it will be playable in the more off-the-wall modes. There are no other confirmed additions at this time, but players should expect several drops based on the similar DLC plans for 2018’s Mario Tennis Aces.

The long-awaited return of Mario Golf to Nintendo Switch fits in right alongside several of Nintendo’s surprise reveals at this year’s E3. During the Direct, Nintendo showed trailers for Advance Wars, WarioWare, and Crusin’, all former Nintendo stalwarts that have been out of the limelight for quite a while. Sega also got in on the fun by revealing Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania, a remake of the first three Super Monkey Ball games for a multitude of systems. For any old-school Nintendo fans, it was a showcase full of returning favorites.

Following one last showing at this year’s E3, Mario sports fans will not have to wait long to get their hands on Mario Golf: Super Rush. The game launches on June 25 of this year, and further details about Nintendo’s DLC plans are sure to follow in short order. From the single-player down to Earth experience to the full-blown Mii-centric RPG adventure, there’s a lot of golf packed into Camelot’s newest game. It should help ring in what is now a filled-out 2021 schedule for the Switch and keep Nintendo fans buzzing in the months to come.
