Mario Golfs Campaign Shouldve Had A Character Creator Instead Of Miis

The Mushroom Kingdom is a fantasy world that oozes creativity and imagination from every pore, which leaves so much room for experimentation from Nintendo’s Mario developers. The recent Mario Golf: Super Rush’s campaign forces users to play as Miis, however, which is a shame. It could have instead asked players to create their own unique Mushroom Kingdom residents themselves.

Mario sports games have been releasing for quite some time now and Mario Golf is one of the most recurring ones to date. From NES Open to Toadstool Tour, Mario Golf has had loads of opportunities to grow into the quality golfing simulator it has become today, but the handheld Mario Golf games in particular took an alternative approach. Since handheld games are much harder to play in single-player, they included in-depth single-player campaigns like Super Rush’s to compensate for the lack of easily accessible multiplayer.

In those games, players chose between a male or female rookie golfer and took them through an RPG-like quest to become the best in the Mushroom Kingdom. It was a simple concept that struck a chord with some players, which is why the single-player adventure was such a selling point for Mario Golf: Super Rush. However, this time players need to use a Mii, which feels cheap when compared to the idea of a fleshed-out character creator in the world of Mario Golf.

Mario Golf: Why A Real Character Creator Would Have Benefited Super Rush

While Miis are an acceptable way of introducing an avatar into a Nintendo game, they rarely match the art style of any game they’re placed in unless it’s something along the lines of Wii Sports. These Mii characters in Super Rush are out of place. Even in Mario’s bright and colorful world, it takes away from the immersion of the experience. Instead, the developers should have taken the extra time to implement a character creator within the game itself – one that allowed players to create their own Mushroom Kingdom resident using all the different fun species as its basis.

Players could’ve created a Koopa with a flowing beard and dark sunshades, or a Toad with a tall and lanky body like Waluigi’s. In this hypothetical creator, players would be able to mix and match parts from all of Mario’s history to create their very own characters who actually fit within the universe they’re golfing in. Players could take the time to adjust their voice, their skin tone, and even dress them up in different outfits in Super Rush as well. Nintendo could even offer the option for players to paste a Mii head over this character so that those who are interested in using Miis can still do so. Mario games take place in a whacky universe with all kinds of colorful creatures, which is why Mario Golf: Super Rush’s inclusion of Miis is a little disappointing.
