The Mario Kart series has become, by far, one of Nintendo’s most successful. Between Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which has become the highest-selling title on the Switch according to Nintendo’s official website, to the incredibly popular mobile game, Mario Kart Tour, the series has reached impressive levels of success in recent years. Due to these successes, unfortunately, it seems as though there won’t be a new main Mario Kart title releasing any time soon. Nevertheless, it’s still fun to discuss what potential additions could be made in Mario Kart 9.
The Mario Kart roster is in some definite need of expanding. The list of playable racers has traditionally been exclusive to characters from the main Mario universe, but that’s beginning to feel exhausted. Pink Gold Peach and Tanooki Mario are fun and all, but Nintendo has such a large pool of characters to choose from. Mario Kart 9 should consider borrowing a page out of the Smash Bros playbook and begin introducing more crossover characters to the hit racing series.
Mario Kart 8’s last wave of DLC saw the inclusion of characters such as Link, Villager, and Isabelle, while the game’s Deluxe edition added Inkling Boy and Girl. Nintendo has already dipped its toes in the crossover pool with Mario Kart 8, but it should jump in with both feet on Mario Kart 9. Here are some characters that would make great additions in the next Mario Kart title.
Mario Kart 9 Crossover Character: Captain Falcon
This one seems like a no brainer. If Nintendo isn’t going to revive the F-Zero series, it might as well throw the game’s most popular character, Captain Falcon, into its most popular racing series. Mario Kart already features two courses from F-Zero, Mute City and Big Blue, as well as Captain Falcon’s signature vehicle, the Blue Falcon. This would really be as simple as adding Captain Falcon into the title and carrying over aspects from the previous game to Mario Kart 9.
Mario Kart 9 Crossover Character: Kirby
Kirby is one of the most adorable characters in Nintendo’s library and would be a perfect fit among the other cute, cartoony characters on Mario Kart 9’s roster. The round, pink Star Warrior has already appeared in a racing game of his own, Kirby Air Ride, which sets up a lot of potential for new karts. Nintendo could simply slap some wheels on a Warp Star or get a little bit more creative and try to incorporate the Dragoon into the game. Kirby’s copy ability could also make for some interesting gameplay if Nintendo were to introduce character abilities to Mario Kart 9, similar to the special items from Mario Kart Double Dash.
Mario Kart 9 Crossover Character: Samus Aran
Samus Aran would be an unexpected addition to Mario Kart, but a welcomed one nonetheless. With Metroid Prime 4 still in development for the foreseeable future, this could be a nice way to satisfy Metroid fans. Samus’ gunship would make for the perfect kart and there would also be a lot of potential in Metroid-themed courses.
Just imagine driving around Zebes, traveling into the lower levels of Brinstar and trying to escape as the facility surrounding players begins to fall apart, similar to Grumble Volcano. Plus, developers could find some interesting ways to incorporate her hand cannon into the game.
Mario Kart 9 Crossover Character: Fox McCloud
The Star Fox series has fallen off heavily over the past decade, so why not add the game’s lead character into a more successful series? At this point, it could be argued Fox is more famous for Super Smash Bros than his own game, so another crossover could help drum up new interest in the franchise. Seeing as the more recent Rainbow Road courses have been set in space, having a course set during an interstellar dog fight would be incredible to see. Fox’s Arwing would also be natural fit alongside the character and awesome during a course’s airborne sections.
Mario Kart 9 Crossover Character: Olimar
The star of the Pikimin series would be another adorable addition to Mario Kart’s roster. His signature kart would either be the S.S. Dolphin or the Hocotate Freight Steam Ship, each possibly beaten up due to a crash landing. A course set on the Pikmin’s planet, or PNF-404, could be a lot of fun. Racers would be dwarfed by all of the dangerous creatures that occupy the planet and Pikmin could randomly appear scattering mystery boxes across the course at different areas.
