Mario & Luigi RPG Series Developer Files for Bankruptcy

AlphaDream, the studio responsible for the ongoing Mario & Luigi RPG franchise, has filed for bankruptcy. It’s no secret that the series hasn’t been performing spectacularly in recent years, with titles like Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey notoriously having a rocky launch. Some of this could be the result of franchise fatigue or perhaps 3DS players had already moved on to the Nintendo Switch by the time those remakes rolled out.

Whatever the case may be for low sales, it was thought that the series would carry on to the Switch in time. Indeed, seeing Mario & Luigi upscaled for a new adventure on Nintendo’s current platform would have been a sight to behold. Sadly, the future of the franchise is now in limbo, in the wake of AlphaDream’s bankruptcy filing.

According to Yahoo! Japan (via IGN), AlphaDream’s revenue began to shrink significantly. By March 2018, the studio had accumulated 400 million yen ($3.7 million USD) in debts, which eventually led to bankruptcy. The company cited low profits and high costs as the reasoning for the filing. What this means for the RPG franchise is less certain, however, as those rights are ultimately Nintendo’s to deal with. Hopefully, another studio can take on the series, but given waining sales that may not be a priority for Nintendo.

The studio began developing video games in 2001 under the initial branding of AlphaStar Soft. It soon changed its name to AlphaDream, and began working on Mario & Luigi in 2003 with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on the Game Boy Advance. The studio has a number of Square alumni that compose it, including designer/composer Chihiro Fujioka and former Square president Tetsuo Mizuno.

Presumably, the Mario & Luigi RPG franchise will be put on hiatus for the time being. It’s a shame, given how many awesome characters and stories the series has introduced since the Game Boy Advance era. There is still hope for those that want to scratch that Mario RPG itch though, as the Paper Mario property isn’t tied to AlphaDream. Perhaps Nintendo will surprise fans with a new entry in that franchise in the near future.

Or, maybe Nintendo can partner with Square Enix to remake the beloved Super Mario RPG that originally debuted on the SNES. Given that one of the party members from that game, Geno, is a name being thrown around by the Smash Bros Ultimate community regularly, it would be a natural jumping on point for fans. Whatever happens though, it’s safe to say that the legacy of Mario RPGs will carry on in someway.
