Mario Party Superstars brought back some of the best minigames in the Mario Party series, so it’s no surprise that the game is one of the most fun installments to date. Even for players too young to have fond memories of the earlier titles, Mario Party Superstars is a strong party game in its own right.
There’s nothing better than an awesome retro game getting a modern overhaul, and whether pitting all four players against each other or splitting the group into teams, Mario Party minigames are reliably chaotic and great at bringing out players’ competitive sides.
10 Booksquirm
First featured in Mario Party 4, “Booksquirm” is a game that encapsulates the mayhem that the best minigames can produce. The stage is a large open book that the players stand on the lower page of. Pages then fall from above to squash unwitting players unless they can move into position under one of the cut-out sections of the page before it reaches the bottom.
The game is complicated by the weird shapes that are thrown at the players and it gets increasingly more difficult over time. More importantly, with only a few small gaps to slip through each time, players are forced to vie to get into a good position before their opponents. “Booksquirm” is a game of judgment, reactions, and most importantly, avoiding getting nudged out of safe spots by other players.
9 Monty’s Revenge
A game that puts a twist on the arcade classic Whackamole, “Monty’s Revenge” puts the player in the position of the moles in the game that pop out of holes, and must try to avoid getting hit. Meanwhile, Monty Mole and his companions are the ones tasked with catching the players out.
A minigame that tends to quickly descend into chaos, the moles are controlled by AI and, as a result, it’s a lot harder to predict where they will go. An added element of difficulty comes from the fact that only one player can occupy a hole at a time, and so a player moving to a spot a second before another player intended to move there can lead to a lot of panic and competitiveness.
8 Messy Memory
A returning minigame from Mario Party 3, “Messy Memory” is one of the hardest memory-based games in Mario Party Superstars. What makes it more difficult is that players only have a very brief period to memorize the positioning of objects on a shelf before it disappears.
After this, they must return the items to their correct positions. Speed is an important factor, as getting everything placed before the memory of the positions fades is paramount, but accuracy is what divides the winner from the losers. A tough memory test, another fun part of “Messy Memory” is looking at the results afterward and comparing where different players made mistakes.
7 Mushroom Mix Up
Featured in the original Mario Party for the Nintendo64, “Mushroom Mix Up” is a classic minigame that tests reaction time, accuracy, luck, and how willing a person is to throw the other players under the bus for the win. The players start on seven different-colored hexagonal platforms above the ocean, and Toad stands on a platform slightly further back.
When Toad holds up a color, every platform besides the indicated color drops into the ocean and any players who didn’t manage to reach the safe platform in time are eliminated. Whilst this is stressful enough on its own, players are also able to ground pound the others, a risky move that might be rewarded if it can stop an opponent moving during a crucial moment. Chaotic minigames like this are part of the reason why there aren’t many other games that can produce thrills like Mario Party Superstars.
6 Hide And Sneak
“Hide and Sneak” is different from most Mario Party minigames in that victory is entirely decided by strategy. The game pits three players against one, as they must hide behind a selection of objects three times, whilst the isolated player has the opportunity to guess one of the objects and catch out any players hiding there.
This minigame can be very tense for the hiding players, as their fate is entirely in the hands of the single-player who may be able to guess what their strategy is. Additionally, the three hiding players don’t have a proper means to communicate, meaning it’s possible for all to hide in the same place and get caught out at once by the catcher. Hide and Sneak is enjoyably different from most other Mario Party minigames.
5 Snowball Summit
Very similar to another minigame in Mario Party Superstars, “Bumper Balls,” “Snowball Summit” comes out on top due to giving players just a bit more control over their character. Both games are simple: the player must knock the others off a small, round platform to win.
In “Snowball Summit,” the players can build a snowball by walking around in the snow, which they can then use to knock into other players. However, the fun of these games comes from the need to balance aggression and defense, as focusing too much on knocking one person off can leave a player vulnerable to being knocked off themselves.
4 Handcar Havoc
“Handcar Havoc” is one of the best minigames from the first Mario Party, the highest-rated Mario Party game, and always deserved the graphical quality that Mario Party Superstars finally gives it. A 2v2 minigame, it puts the players in handcars on rails suspended above lava, where the two teams must race each other to the finish.
The two players on a team need to be in sync, as the handcar relies on both hitting their buttons fast and in rhythm. The handcar also tilts dangerously at corners, and so the players must try and tilt it to keep it stable without going overboard. Falling in lava is an automatic win to the other team, adding in a major element of jeopardy to an already fun game.
3 Bowser’s Big Blast
First seen in Mario Party 2, a Nintendo classic game that has aged remarkably well, “Bowser’s Big Blast” is perhaps the scariest Mario Party minigame. Players stand before a giant Bowser head and must select from a number of levers to push. All but one of the levers is safe, but pressing the other means an explosion and an instant game over for the player who pushed it.
The game gets tense fast, especially as the number of levers is reduced and players start to fall. As the game leaves the outcome completely to chance, every round becomes a tense waiting game. Pushing a lever down and waiting is always nerve-racking, especially as Bowser takes just a second longer than necessary to let out steam and reveal that the lever was safe.
2 Flash Forward
The best Mario Party minigames are the simplest, and that’s where the fun of “Flash Forward” comes from. In it, the players stand around a small stage and a timer starts. When the timer hits zero, the camera flashes, and the player who manages to occupy the center stage at that moment wins.
A game that can descend into mayhem very quickly as the players vie to position themselves to take the center spot, “Flash Forward” is also a classic Mario Party game in another sense – it’s reliance on an AI that is known to make questionable decisions. Even if it seems as though one player has the victory, the game can decide otherwise. Whilst possibly not the best game for the hyper-competitive, “Flash Forward” is always good, light-hearted fun.
1 Dungeon Duos
A classic 2v2 minigame from Mario Party 4, “Dungeon Duos” is a racing minigame that tests a ton of different skills. Unlike other minigames, factors such as communication and quick-thinking become hugely important as players must navigate an obstacle course of doors, levers, and rotating platforms.
In the minigame, players must rely on their partner as they are sent down different corridors. They must wait for their counterpart to activate switches before they can continue. Once the course has been safely navigated, the teams arrive at a balloon, which they must inflate and use to leave the course before the other team. If the teams can’t be separated by the long course, the game is decided by a rapid button mash. With so much varied gameplay, “Dungeon Duos” represents the best that Mario Party minigames have to offer.
