Mario: The Best (& Most Frustrating) Thing About Each Major Female Character

Though we do adore these characters, it would be dishonest to say that they are utterly flawless. Each Mario character comes with virtues and vices.

The female cast of characters in the Super Mario franchise has increased in popularity over time. Each character in the series has enjoyed a moment in the spotlight. In Princess Peach’s case, she was even the star of her own game, Super Princess Peach on the Nintendo DS.

But like any character, or person for that matter, each of them has pluses and minuses. Some have internal conflicts or personality quirks. Others have a lack of depth or development in their character. A few have just gone overlooked for far too long through no fault of their own. Despite their positive qualities, each of these characters has something working against them.

10 BEST: Peach Genuinely Cares About The Plight Of Her Subjects

Whenever Princess Peach’s subjects are facing difficulties or troubles, she puts their welfare first above her own. The loyalty that she shows to the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom is often portrayed throughout the Super Mario franchise. She seems especially fond of keeping the Toads happy and thriving under her rule.

One example where players get to see this rather clearly is in the game Paper Mario: Color Splash. In the beginning section of that game, Peach and Mario journey to Prisma Island in search of a way to restore one of the Toads who had been mysteriously drained of his color. When she sees Toads being harassed by Shy Guys, it almost brings her to tears.

9 WORST: Peach Takes Mario For Granted

In rather stark contrast to her feelings about the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach often seems nonplussed where Mario is concerned. Sure, she’s often calling after him when Bowser inevitably kidnaps her before each new adventure, but she takes for granted what Mario goes through for her.

Mario traverses entire lands and defeats many foes all for the sake of rescuing Peach. Rarely does she express her gratitude, especially in the earlier games in the franchise. Sometimes though, like in Paper Mario: Color Splash, she’s clearly taken Mario’s devotion and accomplishments for granted as a matter of course.

8 BEST: Daisy Keeps A Cheerful And Upbeat Demeanor

No matter what game she makes an appearance in, Princess Daisy is always enthusiastic about her life. Whether it’s golfing, tennis, kart racing, or even battling it up in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, she brings her upbeat attitude along. She’s definitely the most outgoing and enthusiastic of the Super Mario franchise princesses.

Having such a zest for life is great to see, and it’s clear she’s making the most of each experience.

7 WORST: Daisy Hasn’t Been Given The Chance To Add Enough Depth To Her Character

The infamous “Hi, I’m Daisy!” line became something of a nuisance for Mario Kart: Double Dash!! players back on the Nintendo Gamecube. Its legacy has followed Daisy throughout the years. It is even referenced in newer games like Super Mario Party.

It represents something about Daisy that seems to persist even to this day. Despite many cameo appearances throughout several Super Mario franchise games, Daisy has rarely been more than a simple side character, and her character and personality have not really been explored all that much. She remains something of a flat character because of this.

6 BEST: Pauline Holds A Position Of Influence And Her Citizens Admire Her

Pauline is the mayor of New Donk City in the Metro Kingdom of Super Mario Odyssey. She has the kind of personality that seems fitting for her mayoral duties, and the citizens of New Donk City have nothing but praise for her efforts.

She also has a musical history, and this is clearly showcased during the climactic scene of the New Donk City Festival, where she performs as the lead singer in a band atop the New Donk City Hall building. The musicians that are recruited for the event even go so far as to say they are on board with the idea to show their support for their mayor.

5 WORST: Pauline Has Only Been Prominent In Recent Years

Other than reprising roles in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series of games, Pauline has really only been a part of games since the recent Super Mario Odyssey. Other than that, she hasn’t made major appearances in Super Mario franchise games in decades.

Because she’s only recently been considered a major character among the cast, players still do not know very much about her. Her musical history has yet to be explained. That, and her more personal side outside of her duties as mayor of New Donk City have yet to be explored. Her potential is still untapped.

4 BEST: Birdo Has Become A Standout Character Over Time

In the earlier days, Birdo was really only found in Super Mario Bros. 2 as a mini-boss character. Back then she had little personality to express beyond what could be discerned visually. But in recent years, she has made many appearances across a variety of Super Mario franchise games.

With each new cameo or guest appearance, more and more of Birdo’s personality and style have been shown, and it seems she has risen in popularity to become one of the more prominent returning characters from Bowser’s army. She’s an excellent example of how characters can develop over time into more interesting and deep personalities.

3 WORST: Birdo’s Status As Bowser’s Underling Holds Back Her Potential For Growth

As much as Birdo has managed to develop her character over time, the fact that she remains a member of Bowser’s army limits the amount of time she appears in most of the Super Mario franchise games. Because of that, there’s no telling when or how much players will see Birdo’s growth continue.

If, on the other hand, Birdo was one of the characters on Mario and friends’ side of the conflict, the chances that she would have more opportunities to show who she is would be more frequent, and players would even have more opportunities to play as her. For now, the best players can do there is sub-series games like Mario Kart Tour or the various Mario sports games, but maybe someday she’ll have a more central role.

2 BEST: Rosalina Has A Nurturing Aspect To Her Personality

One of Rosalina’s charms is the nurturing demeanor that she exhibits for her Luma star friends. It’s almost as if all of the little star creatures are like her own family, and it can be seen in the way she acts around them. Surprisingly she is still considered a princess, despite it seeming more appropriate to give her the title of queen.

Even outside of her relationship with the Lumas, Rosalina is often shown to be a calm and collected character, with a patient demeanor. She expresses quiet confidence and assuredness. Her mannerisms are regal and dignified, and she definitely carries a sense of maturity about her that makes the other Super Mario franchise princesses feel a bit immature at times by comparison.

1 WORST: Rosalina’s Character Is Only Truly Explored In The Mario Galaxy Games

Despite Rosalina having many cameo and guest appearances across many Super Mario franchise games, she’s only ever really developed her character in the two Super Mario Galaxy titles. While those games did a good job of going into her backstory, players still may have questions about her that remain unanswered.

Hopefully, she will have more prominent roles in future games, where players will have a chance to further explore her character and interactions with the rest of the franchise cast. Until a day like that comes, however, at least there are the Super Mario Galaxy titles to help tell her debut tale.
