Marion Barber, a former NFL running back who played with the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears, was arrested earlier this summer for reportedly bringing a loaded handgun into a Texas church.
TMZ Sports broke the news of Barber’s arrest and provided the details, noting he was originally arrested in the evening on June 15:
According to the police report, cops were first called to the scene after the former Dallas Cowboys star entered a church with a loaded 9mm handgun — and 3 magazines … containing 51 hollow-point bullets. When cops got to the church, officers say Barber seemed disoriented — and one cop says ‘He heard Barber state he did not know what year it was or where he was at.’
The story goes on to say that officers spoke with the pastor, who said that ‘Barber had been speaking erratically inside the church and ‘removed his jacket showing the congregants his firearm in public.” It also said that he was being held for ‘mental detention and observation.’
TMZ’s original story from June 16 on Barber’s arrest said that cops talked to Barber for almost two hours before eventually putting him in handcuffs and taking him away.

Barber last played in the NFL for the Bears during the 2011 season, rushing for six touchdowns and 422 yards in 11 games. He made his name with the Cowboys from 2005 to 2010 with his best seasons being 2006 and 2007, when he had 24 rushing touchdowns and averaged 4.8 yards per carry.
NFL running backs are known for having short careers, but Barber’s fall from grace came quicker than anyone could have imagined. He was a Pro Bowl player in 2007 at the age of 24 and signed a seven-year contract extension with the Cowboys that offseason.
However, injuries and inconsistent play would cause Barber to lose his starting job in Dallas before eventually being released in 2011. He landed in Chicago for one season, but at the age of 28 his football career was over.
Hopefully, Barber is able to get the help he needs to avoid another incident like this in the future.
