Mark Millar & Kevin Smith Team Up For HitGirl Comic Series

Hit-Girl will be back with a new comic series, with Kevin Smith onboard as one of the writers. Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar has been teasing some “big news” regarding the characters Dave Lizewski (aka Kick-Ass) and Mindy McCready (alias Hit-Girl), with the first of these announcements concerning a new Kick-Ass series that will revolve around a young woman taking on the identity of the crime fighter Kick-Ass.

Those news didn’t mention the inclusion of Hit-Girl, and it’s all because Millar was holding onto another big announcement regarding this character. Hit-Girl previously got her own comic book series set between the first Kick-Ass series and the second, with Kick-Ass 3 marking her last appearance on the printed page. Now, Hit-Girl is coming back with a new comic series and a line-up of creators ready to take her on new adventures.

The first arc of the new Hit-Girl series will be written by Mark Millar, with art by Ricardo Lopez Ortiz, and will take McCready to Colombia, where a mother is seeking vengeance for the murder of her child. She enlists Hit-Girl to destroy the killer, but McCready has bigger plans for “Colombia’s most-feared hitman”. In an interview with Comic Book, Millar shared that every arc will be set in a different country, and among the creators lined up for the series is none other than Kevin Smith:

“I’ve written the first big storyline, and this of course will also be the first graphic novel. But just like [Kick-Ass] this is an ongoing monthly we’re launching, and every big arc has a superstar creative team. I’m being followed by someone better by the name of Kevin Smith, and his idea is just so unique. Mine takes place in Colombia, his in LA, and every arc will be in a different country. Other creators lined up are Frank Quitely, Rafael Albuquerque, Pete Milligan, Eduardo Risso, Daniel Way. There’s an Asian artist I’m in love with called Kim Jung Gi, and he’s doing a big arc. It’s very high end. We’re spending a lot of money and just hiring people [I’m] obsessed with.”

As mentioned above, Hit-Girl’s last appearance was in Kick-Ass 3 where, at the end of the story, she showed up at the house of a bullied kid holding Kick-Ass’s uniform and announced that she was going to train him. According to Millar, the new series will pick up “exactly from the last page of [Kick-Ass] 3.” He also shared there will be no crossover with the new Kick-Ass series, stating he has enjoyed having them in separate books as “they’re very different characters who need different types of stories”, even referring to Hit-Girl as a “tiny Frank Castle” due to her more violent nature.

Unlike Dave Lizewski, who had no training whatsoever when he decided to become a superhero, McCready had been trained in martial arts and use of weapons from a very young age thanks to her father, Damon McCready. She is desensitized to blood, violence, and death, but has a warm, loving, and fun personality towards her father – and a sarcastic one towards her crime-fighting partner/apprentice Lizewski. Despite being younger than Kick-Ass, she is a much more effective superhero/crime-fighter, earning her a solid fanbase that will surely be happy with this new series.

It will be specially interesting to see the role that her new trainee will have in this series, if he will join her in her travels or not, and if he will be at the level of Lizewski or even more.
