Marvel Can Avoid Kingpins Canon Problems By Copying DC

Warning: Contains spoilers for Hawkeye episode 5.

In Hawkeye episode 5, “Ronin,” the Disney+ TV show confirmed that Vincent D’Onofrio will be returning to the MCU as Kingpin, Marvel can avoid the canon problems this might create by copying a DC TV series trick. The question of what is and isn’t considered MCU canon has been growing since the introduction of the Disney+ TV shows like WandaVision. With the multiverse entering the MCU and becoming a larger focus of Phase 4 – and potentially Phase 5 – that question only becomes more important and convoluted.

Before Marvel started their own run of MCU TV shows on Disney+, several other Marvel shows had been created. After Agents of SHIELD, the most notable were Netflix’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Vincent D’Onofrio played Wilson Fisk, AKA Kingpin in Daredevil, and returned for the role in the MCU’s Hawkeye at the end of episode 5. Charlie Cox, who played Matt Murdock, Daredevil himself, is also rumored to be returning to the role for the MCU. These decisions suggest that the events of the Netflix series might still be canon for the MCU, despite the complications that might create.

However, two DC TV shows that are technically part of the Arrowverse have already demonstrated how the MCU might be able to sidestep these issues. In Titans season 1 episode 4, “Doom Patrol,” the show introduced Beast Boy, Robotman, Rita Farr, Larry Trainor, and The Chief, Niles Caulder. At the end of the episode, Beast Boy leaves with Rachel Roth and the inhabitants of Doom Manor stay behind. The TV series Doom Patrol was then introduced as a sister show and included the same set and casting for all characters – aside from Niles Caulder, who was then played by Timothy Dalton. However, the events of the Titans episode, the casting change, and the existence of Beast Boy are never addressed. In the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths special, cameo appearances demonstrated that the two shows actually take place in different realities with Titans being on Earth-9 while Doom Patrol is on Earth-21. The MCU can use the same tactic with Kingpin, explaining the return of Vincent D’Onofrio and any inconsistencies as this being another iteration or variant as set up by the variants and the TVA in Loki.

While Vincent D’Onofrio is regularly regarded as the perfect Kingpin casting and replacing him might seem foolish, if the MCU brings him back without doing this, it will cause huge problems for the franchise. There are already some contradictory storylines in Netflix’s Marvel shows that would not fit into the larger meta of the MCU. Additionally, if the Netflix shows are made a canon part of the universe once more, it will make it even harder to ignore the other Marvel shows that more directly conflict with the MCU’s storylines, such as the representation of the Darkhold in Agents of Shield versus WandaVision.

Additionally, merely bringing in some characters as part of a multiverse trick for Hawkeye and the MCU allows them to keep the scope of returning characters limited and make it easier on viewers. The MCU is already becoming unwieldy and more challenging to keep up with. Previously, audiences could largely ignore the Marvel TV shows and just watch big-screen releases. However, shows like Hawkeye and Loki are now clearly part of the main storyline and are becoming required reading for anyone who wants to continue watching the MCU movies. Making the same true for all the previous Marvel Netflix shows will leave some more casual viewers with a lot of catching up to do at a time when MCU is already making a wealth of new content to keep up with.
