Marvel Champions lets players build customized decks to pilot their favorite Marvel heroes in combat. While most of the game’s strategy comes from matching a character’s fifteen hero cards with the best basic and aspect cards, customization isn’t limited to the forces of good. Players can also customize villains by pairing each encounter deck with a modular set and either standard or expert basic cards.

These customization options mean that villain difficulty can vary wildly. Even so, some villains are much stronger than others. Whether they hit hard, scheme quickly, or manipulate the playing field, the most challenging villains give even veteran players a hard time.

10 Rhino

Rhino was designed to be the most accessible villain encounter in Marvel Champions, but his straightforward design actually makes him incredibly difficult in single-player matches. Most villains in the game have multiple stages to their schemes that get progressively more difficult to handle.

Rhino’s The Break In!, however, only has one. This does mean that the scheme’s effects stay relatively tame. The downside is that players lose if the scheme reaches seven threat per player. It’s not terribly challenging to defeat Rhino before this limit is reached with two to four players, but drawing a single Advange treachery card at the wrong time can end the fight in a single turn during solo play.

9 Klaw

Klaw is a villain that isn’t overly challenging in Standard mode, but he gets exponentially more difficult on Expert. Klaw is challenging because, when starting on level two card in Expert mode, players have to deal with the main scheme (Underground Distribution), a side scheme (The “Immortal” Klaw), and a randomly drawn minion right away on turn one.

This quick start makes Klaw particularly challenging for heroes like Iron Man, Black Panther, or Rocket Racoon that need time to build a strong board before they’re most effective. Klaw’s attack gimmick also makes him difficult to predict. Instead of one boost card, Klaw gets two. This makes it hard to predict how much damage he’ll do on any given turn.

8 The Collector (Escape The Museum)

The Galaxy’s Most Wanted campaign box got creative with what villain encounters could look like in Marvel Champions, and the best example of this improved design focus is The Collector’s The Grand Collection encounter. While players can lose by threat as in all encounters, the unique “Collection” game area forces them to change how they play.

Each time a card would be sent to a discard pile from play, it is added to The Collection instead. If the collection reaches five cards per player, the villain wins. While players can act to get cards out of this area, characters like Black Widow and Rocket Racoon that rely on in-play cards will find the encounter extremely challenging.

7 Nebula

Fantasy Flight Games reflected Nebula’s tendency in Guardians of the Galaxy to bounce between good and evil by making her available as both a villain encounter and a playable hero in Marvel Champions. Both versions see Nebula taking advantage of physical upgrades and repeatable combat techniques that slowly snowball to ridiculous heights if not stopped.

Nebula has ways to deal with several popular hero strategies. Her Cutthroat Ambition technique prevents Nebula from receiving any more than five damage, which mitigates rush-down play. She’s also able to dish out status cards to protect her from attacks and thwarts altogether.

6 Arnim Zola

Marvel Champions 10 Hardest To Beat Enemies Ranked

Arnim Zola is a sort of mirror image to Red Skull. Whereas Johann Schmidt punishes aggressive players by overwhelming them with side schemes, Zola repeatedly throws out strong minions with powerful keywords, stats, and effects. Zola himself also has the rare Retaliate keyword.

Retaliate deals one damage to any character that damages Zola; this makes combat punishing for ally-swarm decks or heroes like Gamora that like to chip away slowly at opponents with small, frequent attacks. The only thing that keeps Zola somewhat in check is that there isn’t a big difference between his second and third stages. If players can build a solid board by the mid-fight, they’re likely to keep that momentum into Zola’s final form.

5 Red Skull

Captain America’s legendary foe, Red Skull, joined Marvel Champions as the titular character in the Rise of the Red Skull box, and his campaign encounter proved to be satisfyingly difficult. Red Skull is more of a leader and planner than a face-to-face fighter in the Marvel canon, and this is reflected in-game by making him the master of side schemes. While the threat from all of his schemes can be manageable in games with a strong Justice character, solo players in any other aspects or groups without Justice will find Red Skull nearly impossible to beat.

4 Ultron

True to his character in Avengers, Ultron is a powerhouse Marvel Comics villain that quickly gets out of hand the longer he exists. Ultron’s first and second stages are challenging but manageable. His third stage, however, ramps the difficulty up by a substantial amount.

Ultron’s basic attack and thwart of two and four are respectable on their own, but his real danger lies in the swarms of Ultron drones that he summons. Characters not equipped to deal with minion swarms will be quickly overwhelmed, and the extra hit point and attack value that Ultron grants each one on his third stage means that they can take out healthy heroes in very little time.

3 Green Goblin (Mutagen Formula)

Marvel Champions 10 Hardest To Beat Enemies Ranked

Green Goblin was the first villain pack released for Marvel Champions, and it contained two different powerful Green Goblin variants encounters for players to tackle. While Risky Business was well-received for its thematic play, it’s Mutagen Formula that’s remained memorably challenging on Expert difficulty.

Green Goblin’s second stage automatically deals two encounter cards to players. This boost means that the first villain phase of the game will total three encounter cards for each player, which is enough to bury heroes before they’ve had a chance to prepare. This scenario also contains strong boosts for Green Goblin and several minions, so there’s rarely time for players to rest or rebuild.

2 Kang

Marvel Champions 10 Hardest To Beat Enemies Ranked

Disney Plus’ Loki may have given fans a brief introduction to Kang, and Marvel Champions takes full advantage of the temporal conqueror’s gimmicks. Kang is difficult to fight because it’s impossible for players to know exactly what they’re going to be facing when Kang advances to his second stage (or where he’ll start in expert mode).

In Marvel lore, multiple versions of Kang with different personalities and motivations exist throughout the timeline. To reflect this, Kang is the only Champions character with randomized villain cards. Immortus, Iron Lad, Rama-Tut, and Scarlet Centurion all play differently, making it difficult for heroes to plan ahead.

1 Ronan the Accuser

Ronan the Accuser is currently the most challenging villain in Marvel Champions by quite a large margin. While fans expected the final encounter of the Galaxy’s Most Wanted campaign box to the formidable, few expected near-impossible task that was defeating Ronan the Accuser on Expert mode. Ronan is difficult to deal with on all fronts.

His attacks are strong, his encounter deck is filled with Surge, and he’s got one of the larger health pools in the game. In fact, Ronan the Accuser was so overpowered that Fantasy Flight Games released an update in their most recent Rules Reference that made one of his formerly mandatory side scheme optional. As of now, Ronan is the only villain that has received a nerf.
