Classic and influential Marvel Comics storylines featuring ever-popular superheroes are receiving a set of masterful editions for dedicated fans of the Marvel Universe, courtesy of Penguin. New comic anthologies from Penguin Classics will star Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captain America in their earliest stories.

In an expected move, Marvel Comics will be partnering with established publisher Penguin Random House to bring a set of anthology books to their valued readership. Each of the anthology novels will be based on a certain well-known hero within Marvel’s expansive library of comic books. The partnership may seem strange at first glance, but after parting ways with previous distributor Diamond Comic Distributors, Marvel has entered a new distribution deal with Penguin Random House. Though their working relationship may be off to a rocky start with retailers reporting issues with the first shipment of comics, Marvel and Penguin haven’t wasted any time in broadening their future partnership beyond comic store shelves.

Coming to bookshelves from Penguin Classics’ own Marvel Collection in the summer of 2022 (as revealed by Penguin Classics on Twitter), these anthology books, available in both hardcover and paperback editions, won’t just include a random set of stories tied around a particular superhero but a historical moment at the beginning of their pop-culture history. For instance, The Amazing Spider-Man anthology by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko will begin in 1962 and carry on through 1964, which chronicles the first two years of Peter Parker’s career as Spider-Man. The Black Panther collection (featuring Don McGregor, Rich Buckler, Billy Graham, Stan Lee, and Jack Kirby) will include the hero’s 1966 origin story and the full ‘Panther’s Rage’ arc from his 1970s series, while the Captain America collection (from Jack Kirby, Joe Simon, Stan Lee, Jim Steranko, and John Romita Sr.) will bring together Captain America’s first appearances from the 1941s with stories from his 1960s return.

Included with the original stories will be a foreword and introduction by some influential figures within the comic and novel industry. New York Times bestseller Jason Reynolds will pen a foreword for the Spider-Man collection, while Hugo and Nebula Award winner Nnedi Okorafor and New York Times bestseller Gene Luen Yang will handle Black Panther and Captain America respectively. With prestigious contributors and a ‘classics’ label, it’s clear this series is intended to fully acknowledge Marvel Comics’ unique contribution to culture, as a medium often dismissed as disposable is celebrated in style.

June 14, 2022 currently serves as the release date for the first set of books within this Marvel/Penguin partnership. Each of the three Marvel books on Captain America, Spider-Man, and Black Panther are available for pre-order, with hopefully more to come from Marvel Comics’ new relationship with Penguin Random House.
