Marvel Confirms Its Version of The BatSignal is Reserved For [SPOILER]

Warning: Contains spoilers for Fantastic Four #38!

Marvel has revealed its own version of Batman’s Bat-Signal, but who it is reserved for is truly shocking: She-Hulk! In Fantastic Four #38, on sale now in print and digital, Marvel’s First Family finds themselves needing She-Hulk’s expertise not in combat but in the courtroom—and Reed Richards has a special signal he uses to let her know when she’s needed.

She-Hulk has been a perennial fan favorite since her introduction nearly 40 years ago. She-Hulk is Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner. After a life-saving blood transfusion from Bruce, Jennifer gained his gamma powers, but unlike her cousin, she had control over her transformations. This gave her, not only the super-strength and endurance that comes with a gamma mutation, but it also did not rob Jennifer of her intellect. Viewed as far more personable than her cousin, She-Hulk has been not only a member of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, she also represents many of her colleagues in court, as an attorney working almost exclusively with super-heroes. The last few years saw She-Hulk struggle with her more savage side, and she almost fell prey to brainwashing at the hands of Russia’s Winter Guard. Now, She-Hulk is returning to her roots—and the courtroom, as seen in Fantastic Four #38, written by Dan Slott, with art by Fransesco Manna, colors by Jesus Aburtov and letters by Joe Caramagna.

In Fantastic Four #38, long-time Fantastic Four foe The Wizard arrives at the team’s headquarters, demanding custody of his “son” Bentley, who has been living with the Fantastic Four for several months. In reality, Bentley is a clone of The Wizard, but the villain views Bentley as his child, and now he wants the child back. The Fantastic Four confront The Wizard in their headquarters’ lobby, and instead of fighting them, he serves them legal papers, asserting his custody. Realizing that they will really have to face The Wizard in court, Reed calls on She-Hulk for assistance. The scene cuts to She-Hulk helping a child and in the sky above her, a green, flaming “4” appears in the sky—looking just like the signal Reed uses to summon the rest of the team. She-Hulk sees it, instantly recognizing that Reed needs her legal expertise, and not her muscles. Readers then see She-Hulk begin to change into her professional clothes, ready to take on The Wizard in court.

While the signal Reed uses to signal for She-Hulk’s help is a green riff on the Fantastic Four’s flame signal, it can also be viewed as a version of the Bat-Signal as well. When She-Hulk sees the green “4” in the sky, she knows she and she alone is needed—no one else. Likewise, when the citizens of Gotham see the Bat-Signal, they know the police need Batman’s help. She-Hulk’s signal takes it a step further—it is not only saying help is needed, it is saying exactly what kind of help is required. The signal also recognizes that She-Hulk is far more than just a gamma-irradiated monster—she has skills and knowledge that make her useful not only in battle, but in matters off the battlefield as well.
