Marvel Confirms Why Its Smartest Minds Dont Respect SpiderMan

Warning: Spoilers for Marvel Comics’ X-Men #4!

The latest issue of X-Men takes a not-so-subtle jab at the educational background of one of Marvel Comics’ most famous superheroes, Peter Parker aka the Amazing Spider-Man. Spidey has always been regarded as an extremely intelligent and quick-witted hero within his storied Marvel history, but the latest chapter in the adventures of Marvel’s mightiest mutants may have clinched that Parker is not as revered as fans once believed.

A former student of New York City’s Midtown Science High School, Peter Parker’s heroic alter ego is widely regarded as a physical force to be reckoned with throughout the Marvel Universe’s Earthbound roster. However, Peter Parker is no slouch in the brains department either; with a genius-level IQ to match his equally formidable brawn. Along with designing his own superhero suit, Peter’s scientific prowess proved instrumental in the creation of his web-shooters, which store his tensile-strength webbing. As Spider-Man has grown as both a scholar and superhero, Parker’s methods have only improved with each obstacle that he happens to face. It was these factors and a solid GPA that eventually made Peter a suitable candidate for New York’s prestigious Empire State University (ESU). Following the death of close friend and fellow ESU student, Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch, Peter even found himself being mentored under Earth’s smartest man Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic as part of Reed’s science-based establishment of heroes known as the Future Foundation.

Despite housing Peter Parker and a stable number of famous alumni such as Norman Osborn, Emma Frost, Captain Britain, and White Tiger, Gerry Duggan (Marauders) and Javier Pinta (Doctor Strange)’s X-Men #4 affirms a certain stigma directed toward Empire State University. In a memo sent to fellow employees of mutant counter organization Orchis, focused on the mysterious Project Polyphemus, the fictional ESU is humorously ridiculed by the higher-ups: “You have all earned your way here, into this sacred position of defense, and it’s not like any of us took online courses at Empire State.” The memo itself is from Orchis’ mysterious head of human resources Dr. Stasis, a relatively new addition to the X-Men mythology. Stasis was introduced in previous issues of Duggan and Pinta’s all-new X-Men series as someone obsessed with the X-Men’s method in resurrecting fallen mutants. However, Stasis quickly makes an attempt to conceal his mockery of ESU by playing it off as a harmless joke intended to relieve tension within the company.

Though photography has been the profession prevalent in Parker’s life throughout his teenage and early adult years, there is no career that outweighs Peter’s overbearing passion for science. Graduating with multiple degrees in biophysics and biochemistry from Empire State University finally gave Peter the opportunity to become a professional chemistry teacher at his old stomping grounds of Midtown Science High School. As the name of the school itself hints, science has always been heavily ingrained in Spider-Man from the very beginning of his comic career. This is an aspect of the Spider-Man character that the cinematic adaptations of the character have largely ignored but may become even more prevalent if Tom Holland’s Peter Parker continues onto his college career.

Spider-Man’s affiliation with Empire State University may grant him ineligible to join the Illuminati or even A.I.M., but he was skilled enough to make a difference in the lives of the little guys and girls as an educator in his own neighborhood. Marvel’s X-Men #4 is now available.
