Marvel Disney Shows Could Introduce MULTIPLE Lokis (To Replace Tom Hiddleston)

Marvel’s Loki TV series could introduce alternate versions of Loki – and potentially set up a replacement for Tom Hiddleston. The idea of the Multiverse is key to Marvel’s Phase 4 plans. It was secretly set up in the Thor films, but became particularly prominent in Avengers: Endgame. There, the Avengers used time travel to collect the Infinity Stones from the past, aiming to use them to reverse Thanos’ snap and restore half the life in the universe.

They also unwittingly created a new timeline, one in which Loki escaped in the aftermath of the Battle of New York in 2012. Worse still, the Trickster God successfully stole the Tesseract, and he’ll reportedly use it to travel in time himself. Set photos suggest Loki winds up in an uneasy alliance with a group known as the Time Variance Authority, whose job is to police the timeline – and prune realities if they deem them dangerous.

Loki will clearly be focused on both time travel and the concept of the Multiverse. Given that’s the case, there have long been rumors the series will introduce alternate versions of the Trickster God. If these are accurate, then it’s possible Marvel has found a smart way of recasting Tom Hiddleston.

How The Multiverse Could Introduce New Lokis

Marvel Disney Shows Could Introduce MULTIPLE Lokis (To Replace Tom Hiddleston)

The MCU’s model of the Multiverse was introduced in 2016’s Doctor Strange, and it’s important to note there’s a lot more to it than simple alternate timelines. As director Scott Derrickson noted on Twitter, the MCU’s Multiverse model is lifted straight from the comics, notably a thorough explanation offered in Doctor Strange #21. This envisioned Earth as at the center of an infinite sea. Alternate Earths are just one swim-stroke removed from the center; the further away you go, the more the laws of nature change, and there are even pocket universes such as Mephisto’s Hell or the Dark Dimension. Tom Hiddleston’s character in Loki originates from a timeline very close to the mainstream MCU, but there’s no reason to assume he couldn’t swim a little further out in this infinite sea – and encounter very different versions of himself.

Indeed, there have long been rumors this will be the case. Last November, there were reports Sophia Di Martino – the show’s co-star – would be playing a female Loki. These were apparently confirmed by recent set photos, which showed Di Martino in a female version of the Loki costume. Meanwhile, That Hashtag Show has reported the series will introduce a young Loki as well, perhaps similar to the incarnation who became a member of the Young Avengers. The general assumption is that the series will end with Loki jumping into the mainstream MCU – perhaps even bringing a version of Mjolnir, setting up Thor: Love & Thunder – but which Loki will it be? This offers a fascinating opportunity for Marvel to write Hiddleston out, replacing him with a new actor or actress.

Which Version Of Loki Would Work In Phase 4?

Marvel’s Loki TV series potentially offers Marvel a unique opportunity to recast the Trickster God. It’s true this is only theoretical; there’s currently no evidence Hiddleston is looking to leave the MCU. However, it’s quite remarkable how well either of these rumored alternate Lokis would fit with the MCU’s Phase 4 plans. Assuming Sophia Di Martino really is a female Loki, she would serve as an excellent antagonist in Thor: Love & Thunder, which sees Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster wield Mjolnir. Returning Director Taika Waititi is taking inspiration from the Jason Aaron run, which saw Jane Foster’s Thor battle the female Loki in one memorable sequence.

Meanwhile, in the comics, Kid Loki is strongly associated with a superhero team called the Young Avengers. There’s substantial evidence the MCU is setting up the Young Avengers for later in Phase 4, with most of these introductions occurring on Disney+; there have been confirmed or rumored introductions for Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, Hulkling, Wiccan, America Javez, and Patriot, while Avengers: Endgame positioned Cassie Lang to transform into the teen superhero Stature. In the comics, Kid Loki was directly responsible for bringing one iteration of the Young Avengers together, as part of a major redemption arc. That was intended as a deliberate inversion of the Avengers’ origin, where they first assembled in order to defeat Loki; Marvel Studios could well choose to take the exact same approach in the MCU.
