A truly dedicated Marvel fan has built a replica Captain America shield that actually bounces back to the wielder on impact. Cap’s Vibranium shield is one of the most iconic weapons in the entire Marvel universe. Though it looks simple enough, it’s actually incredibly powerful, as has been shown time and time again in the films.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Steve Rogers is given his Vibranium shield by Howard Stark during World War II, after proving his mettle with less sturdy versions of the weapon. Captain America’s shield has since featured prominently in many of the franchise’s movies and shows. It was broken by Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, only for an alternate version of it to return via time travel at the end of the movie. Most recently, the shield served as a major plot point in the Disney+ MCU series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, in which it was fought over by a number of different characters.

Now, one skilled Marvel fan has constructed a functional real-life replica of Captain America’s iconic shield. YouTuber Jake Laser, who builds tools and weapons from the MCU and other pop culture franchises, has made a Captain America shield that actually bounces back to the user after striking objects. The shield is made of carbon fiber, fiberglass, and rubber and fastens to the user’s arm via a pair of magnets. When thrown, the force jars the shield loose from its magnetic moorings, bounces beautifully off of the target, and returns for the user to catch it. Check out Laser’s full video below.

Obviously no real-world shield can match Cap’s for its fictional blend of lightness and durability, but Laser’s shield is just about as close as one could get. Vibranium has been used as something of a catch-all reasoning for the MCU’s advanced technology, explaining away everything from the indestructability (almost) of Cap’s shield to Black Panther’s highly advanced super suit. Short of actual Vibranium, however, Laser’s clever construction is a pretty good substitute.

By the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson officially picked up the shield and the title of Captain America. That could lead to some interesting storylines for the franchise in the near future, though the specifics have yet to be revealed. They may revolve around Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine character, who’s become a shadowy presence in the MCU recently. Whatever the rest of Phase 4 holds, it’s always exciting to see the old Captain America shield spin into action.
