Marvel Halloween Special Casts Coco Star Reportedly As Werewolf by Night

Marvel Studios’ Halloween special is gaining steam as Coco and Old Star Gael García Bernal reportedly joins the cast as Werewolf by Night. Originally created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog from concepts by Stan Lee and Roy Thomas, Jack Russell served as the first incarnation of the lycanthrope hero who is capable of transforming without a full moon and retain his intellect while transformed. The character would later get a new incarnation with Jake Gomez, created by Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff and Scott Eaton, who was a member of the Hopi Native American tribe whose family was cursed with lycanthropy and uses his powers to fight back against a nefarious pharmaceutical company.

The first attempt at adapting Werewolf by Night came in 2005 with Chocolat’s Robert Nelson Jacobs penning a script and production set to begin that year, though the project would ultimately fall apart. The character has made appearances in multiple animated shows, including The Super Hero Squad Show, Ultimate Spider-Man and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., though a solo attempt had seemingly been forgotten about. However, as Marvel Studios is looking to beef up its Disney+ roster of programs, it appears Werewolf by Night may be getting another chance to shine.

The Wrap has brought word that Marvel Studios’ untitled Halloween special has officially cast Gael García Bernal and will be a werewolf-focused Disney+ show. Though exact details are being kept under wraps, sources are reporting that the special will be based on Werewolf by Night, however which iteration is currently unknown. Production is being eyed to get underway in early 2022.

When word first broke of Marvel’s Halloween special earlier this year, much of the discussion focused on the possibility of it being a Werewolf by Night story, namely as the casting search was for a Latino male. Though Bernal is a bit above the age range put out for the casting search, his role in the series does point towards the possibility of his taking on the Jake Gomez incarnation of the superhero. Though Marvel has yet to comment on the special or the newest casting at the time of writing, it is interesting to note the studio has seemingly been building towards bringing the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, namely in Phase Four.

Noted comic book aficionado Kevin Smith revealed earlier this year that he wasn’t allowed to use Werewolf by Night for his now-scrapped Howard the Duck series as Marvel’s film division had plans for the character, while fan art for Moon Knight has pegged Ethan Hawke as playing the character in an antagonistic take for the Disney+ series. With Marvel currently developing a Blade film with Mahershala Ali leading the way and Moon Knight set to premiere next year, it would make sense that the special could introduce Werewolf by Night into the MCU as the trio have frequently crossed paths and worked together as part of the Midnight Sons. Now that Bernal is set as the lead of the special, it will be interesting to see if his reported Werewolf by Night shows up in a prior project.
