Marvel hints that Shang-Chi is powerful and skilled enough to take on the Hulk in single combat – and actually come out on top. The master of all martial arts is quite popular, owing to the recent release and positive reviews of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. But as strong as he may be in the movie, he’s even stronger in the comics – and a moment in Shang-Chi vs. The Marvel Universe #4, written by Gene Luen Yang with art by Dike Ruan and colors by TrĂona Farrell, proves Shang-Chi has a secret technique to take down the Incredible Hulk.
In Shang-Chi vs. The Marvel Universe, Shang-Chi has inherited his father’s criminal organization, the Five Weapons Society. Rather than disband it entirely, Shang-Chi believes it can be used as a force for good – but the superheroes of the Marvel world are naturally superstitious and weary of Shang-Chi’s decision. Shang-Chi and his family face friends like Spider-Man, Captain America, and Wolverine – and when Shang-Chi receives a dream that his lost sister is in the Negative Zone, he knows he’ll have to break into the Fantastic Four’s headquarters to travel there.
Shang-Chi and family find his mother, not his sister, in the Negative Zone; she used her abilities to construct her ancestral home as a haven while awaiting rescue. Upon journeying back to Earth, they’re met by the Fantastic Four, who aren’t too happy with Shang-Chi’s family breaking into their home and using their equipment without their permission. As a fight breaks out, Shang-Chi squares off against the Thing and hits him with a single strike; the Thing cries out in pain and can no longer move his arm. Shang-Chi has struck a key pressure point on Benjamin Grimm.
As one of the best hand-to-hand combatants in the Marvel Universe, Shang-Chi would naturally have knowledge of attacking an enemy’s pressure points. This isn’t a new technique in Marvel comics either; in the Agents of Atlas series, Temugin (the son of the Mandarin), was able to fight the Hulk through attacking his stress points. Unfortunately Temugin lost the fight, but Shang-Chi has considerably more experience and training. Should Shang-Chi and the Hulk ever came to blows, Shang-Chi could exploit his pressure points, making it a matter of whether the enraged Hulk could manage to land a blow on Shang-Chi before being incapacitated.
Once a C-list hero, Shang-Chi now mingles with the likes of Iron Man and Spider-Man (and the success of his film certainly doesn’t hurt). A popular comic character invariably finds himself fighting former friends – which is exactly what Shang-Chi vs. The Marvel Universe depicts in every issue. While Shang-Chi isn’t necessarily as physically strong as the Hulk, his knowledge in martial arts potentially gives him the edge in a battle.
