Marvel Insults Hawkeyes Original Comics Costume (And His Fans)

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Hawkeye episode 3!

The MCU finally acknowledged the Hawkeye original comics costume in Disney+’s Hawkeye, but not the series might have insulted the character’s fans in the process. Marvel Studios always succeeded at adapting original comic book costumes for the big screen, especially in movies like Black Panther and the recent Eternals. Yet, Hawkeye is still the only major character not to get a comic-accurate costume. Even with the release of the Hawkeye series, the only mention of the Hawkeye comics costume so far has been satirical.

Hawkeye episode 3, “Echoes,” answered the question that has been on fans’ minds since 2011’s Thor; why has Hawkeye never donned his original comics suit? While sitting at a diner, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) asked Clint (Jeremy Renner) why he refuses to wear a suit, presenting him with a sketch that fans immediately recognized as Hawkeye’s comic accurate suit.

While the costume sketch was intended to be fan service, Clint’s snide remarks about the suit sounded like Marvel Studios themselves were insulting Hawkeye’s comic book appearance. After years of fans clamoring for Clint to lead his own project, the Hawkeye series came with the expectation that the titular character would finally sport Hawkeye’s original comics costume. Still, all the series has done so far is insult that costume and the fans demanding to see it. In a universe filled with superpowered individuals saving the world in spandex, a purple costume and face mask would not be the silliest get-up. The sarcastic comments made towards the suit were more of an insult to the character and his fans, upholding the idea that Hawkeye is the least important Avenger.

Ever since the first Avengers, each member of the Avengers received a comic accurate suit, except for Hawkeye. This immediately relegated Clint to a lower rank than his fellow Avengers, giving the impression that he is simply another S.H.I.E.L.D. agent that happens to be good with a bow and arrow, especially to the general audience. Even as the MCU expanded and started introducing more characters with flashier costumes, Hawkeye remained stuck with his all-black spy outfit. Therefore, the degrading comments towards the purple and blue Hawkeye comics costume were insulting to the fans of the character and the character himself, which overshadowed the fan service the diner scene was trying to provide.

While Clint may never get to don the Hawkeye original comics costume, Kate’s future in the MCU is already a lot more promising, as she is already wearing a comic book accurate outfit in the Hawkeye series. Hawkeye fans are left to wonder why Marvel Studios are still against giving Clint his original comics costume when they were adamant about giving every other major character an outfit identical to their comic counterpart. With three episodes left until Hawkeye wraps up, perhaps fans will get a chance to see Clint in his comic accurate suit before the torch is passed on to Kate Bishop.
