Marvel Is Calling Out Its Own Confusing Time Travel Rules

Warning! Spoilers for Strange Academy #14 by Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics is calling out its own time travel rules, as some of the youngest and brightest magic users in the Marvel Universe don’t understand the logic behind it. In a new preview for Strange Academy #14 by Marvel Comics, the students learn about traveling through time, leading Emily Bright to ask how magic users decide what constitutes a successful journey? The answer? Well, that depends who you ask.

In most science fiction and fantasy franchises, time travel rules (while often different) are mostly consistent to avoid continuity issues. However, in both Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the rules of time travel constantly change. The rules are much looser in the comics, as different writers, arcs, and characters use time travel to serve the story, which often conflicts with other stories using a similar plot device. However, the MCU has tried – and often failed – to have consistent rules, despite attempts at explaining how time travel worked in great detail during Avengers: Endgame. With the rules and reasoning constantly changing, even students at Doctor Strange’s magic school wonder what’s the real deal with time travel.

In a new preview for Strange Academy #14 by Skottie Young, Huberto Ramos, Edgar Delgado, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, Brother Voodoo takes the students across the Multiverse, showing them the dark future of the Age of Apocalypse. Intending to show them when to and not to interfere when traveling through time, Brother Voodoo says magic users take great care when deciding when to manipulate time and intervene. However, upon returning, Emily Bright has questions for her teacher.

Bright brings up a good point, as she asks how it is fair that heroes are allowed to time travel when things are “broken” or don’t work out their way. However, when villains or ordinary people have problems, it’s just “meant to be.” Brother Voodoo dodges answering the questions, offering the students to try a solo time hop instead.

Bright is correct that when heroes mess with time, it’s generally accepted as fine as long as there’s a valid reason given. However, it’s frowned upon when anyone else messes with the sacred timeline. Sure, heroes know best, but there’s little consistency to the overall rules, with the comic showing another example of how time travel has become increasingly confusing the more characters do it. Marvel Comics calling out their own time travel rules is totally fair in this case. Strange Academy #14 is in comic book stores on Wednesday.
