Marvel Is Replacing The Statue of Liberty With Captain America In Phase 4

The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer revealed several new details, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe turning the Statue of Liberty into Captain America for Phase 4. No Way Home sets out to change Marvel films forever, bringing a massive Multiverse story to the MCU. In the movie, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) can’t handle the world knowing he’s Spider-Man, so he asks Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help. Unfortunately, while Doctor Strange obliges, things don’t go smoothly. The memory wipe spell backfires after Parker messes with it, and a hole is opened in the Multiverse, allowing Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and other past Spider-Man villains to make their way into the MCU.

No Way Home continued to tease more of the story in its latest trailer. The video reveals more looks at the villains, including Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman, and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin. Some villains, including Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Rhys Ifans’ Lizard, even get updated looks for the film. Beyond the villains breaking into the MCU, the trailer also shows Spider-Man facing off with Doctor Strange over the fates of the criminals. Doctor Strange seemingly wants the villains dead, but Spider-Man has different plans.

The latest No Way Home trailer also reveals another update for Phase 4. The trailer appears to conclude with a battle taking place on scaffolding around construction on the Statue of Liberty. The construction adds a giant Captain America shield to the statue, seemingly replacing the torch. The shield even comes down during the fighting, crashing through the scaffolding. And the update to the Statue of Liberty has far-reaching implications throughout the MCU.

First and foremost, the shield serves as a Captain America tribute. Following Captain America’s repeated sacrifices to save human lives, Phase 4 appears to be rolling out several honors to the character. For example, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gives Chris Evans’ Captain America an updated exhibit at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. So while the shield on the Statue of Liberty could be a clue that the scene takes place in an alternate timeline in the MCU, putting a shield on Lady Liberty in the main timeline would be keeping with the MCU’s tributes to Cap. After all, Steve Rogers was from Brooklyn, so it makes sense for New York City to honor one of their own. But, of course, with the shield coming down, the tribute may be short-lived.

Additionally, the Captain America shield Easter egg hints at the mindset of people in the MCU. The Statue of Liberty is a universal sign of freedom, welcoming citizens and immigrants with a torch that lights the path to liberty. However, Captain America’s shield on Lady Liberty gives a drastically different message. Rather than a welcoming torch, the shield is there for defense. It may show that the world is still in a state of unrest after the events of Avengers: Endgame, which brought back half of the universe’s population. The United States, in particular, seems to become colder and more closed off, now seemingly twisting Captain America’s image for political propaganda. With even more villains coming in from across the Multiverse in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it appears that won’t change anytime soon.
