Marvel Just Made Another Iron Man MCU Decision Look Stupid

Warning: SPOILERS for Hawkeye episode 1.

In Hawkeye, Marvel reveals that someone took Clint Barton’s Ronin suit from the Avengers’ facility, making an Iron Man decision look incredibly stupid. Clint Barton/Hawkeye’s (Jeremy Renner) fun-filled holiday in New York with his kids comes to an abrupt end in Hawkeye. In the series, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) wears Hawkeye’s old Ronin suit while fighting off criminals at a black-market auction, and she winds up on the wrong side of Hawkeye/Ronin’s old foes. Now, Hawkeye is on a mission to clear up the situation and ensure Bishop’s safety before he can get back to his family for the holidays.

Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) has had a long journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character first appeared as Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) security detail/chauffeur in Iron Man, but he eventually climbed up the ranks. Later, Iron Man makes Happy Hogan, who’s also one of Stark’s friends, the Head of Security for Stark Industries, and Happy takes on even more responsibility in Spider-Man: Homecoming. In the film, Hogan is in charge of asset management and oversees the transfer of Stark property from Avengers Tower to the group’s new facility. Unfortunately, Vulture (Michael Keaton) tries to disrupt the move and steal the items, but Spider-Man (Tom Holland) ultimately stops the villain.

Hawkeye introduces a twist that makes Iron Man look silly. In the series premiere, Kate Bishop winds up at the underground auction where several rare and expensive items go up for sale. Ronin’s retractable sword and outfit are among these items. According to the auctioneer, someone recovered them from “the wreckage of the Avengers Compound.” Though Kate Bishop dons the Ronin costume to hide her identity as she fights off villains, the items showing up at the auction reveal Iron Man’s serious flaws in judgment when it comes to appointing Happy as the man to look out for the Avengers assets, particularly in their most vulnerable times.

Time and time again, Happy Hogan fails at his job. For example, he ignored warnings about the transport being in danger in Homecoming, leaving Peter Parker to clean up his mess. And with Ronin’s outfit and sword showing up at a shady auction for rich people, it’s clear Happy simply can’t keep things from falling into the wrong hands. Happy has been with Stark Industries for years, so it makes sense that he’d eventually climb up the corporate ladder. However, he’s clearly not suited to be in charge of Stark’s asset management, and he’s lucky villains didn’t steal more powerful items besides Ronin’s retractable sword.

Though Happy seems out of his depth, there are extenuating circumstances. In Avengers: Endgame, Thanos (Josh Brolin) attacked the Avengers Compound, leaving destruction and rubble in his wake. Considering the compound was a disaster site, Happy should get a bit of slack. Anyone from clean-up crews to passersby could take advantage of that type of chaos and make off unseen with select items. An outfit and sword are relatively low on the scale of destructive weapons at the Avengers Compound. So, all things considered, Happy’s asset management faux pas could’ve been much worse.
