Marvel Just Set Up The MCUs Doctor Doom

The fourth episode of Marvel’s What If…? subtly set up the MCU’s Doctor Doom. The Multiverse has become a reality in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with countless branching timelines created that are very different from the one explored in the films. Sometimes the differences are only subtle, but on other occasions, they are much more dramatic; the fourth episode being a perfect example of the latter.

In order to find a way to change the past, Doctor Strange sought out the Lost Library of Cagliostro. In the real world, Count Alessandro Cagliostro was an 18th-century occultist known for psychic healing, alchemy, and scrying. The comic book version of Cagliostro is very different, though; he’s a sorcerer who became obsessed with time travel, copying pages from the book of dark magic called the Darkhold, and extending his own lifespan using the mystic arts. Cagliostro collected all manner of forbidden knowledge, and he left these teachings behind for others to follow him. This isn’t the first time Cagliostro has been mentioned in the MCU; in Doctor Strange, the Ancient One possessed just one of his books, which contained secrets of the Dark Dimension as well as guidance on how to use the Time Stone. But now it seems he left behind a lot more than just one book.

The Lost Library of Cagliostro actually serves as a sort of setup for Doctor Doom. The sworn enemy of the Fantastic Four, in the comics Doctor Doom is not just one of Earth’s greatest scientific minds – he is also a powerful sorcerer thanks to those who choose to mentor Doom, such as Cagliostro himself. Doom has always shown an interest in the mystic arts, although for some time Strange considered him significantly weaker, believing he used technology to compensate for his lesser skills. Doom has expanded his powers by seeking out tutors, like Cagliostro, who didn’t mind teaching him about dark magic even Doctor Strange would be wary of.

This means Marvel’s What If…? episode 4 can serve as a subtle setup for the MCU’s Doctor Doom. In the comics, Doom sought the secrets of sorcery because he hoped to find a way to resurrect his mother, a motive that’s strikingly similar to Doctor Strange’s in What If…? Thus the MCU’s Doctor Doom could hear the same legends Strange heard in that divergent timeline, seeking out the Lost Library of Cagliostro in an attempt to achieve the impossible, unpick an absolute point in time, and seemingly change the MCU’s timeline rules again. The Library held many secrets – as Strange flicked through the books he identified ones on transmutation, telekinesis, and teleportation, before settling on one about time manipulation. Thus, Doctor Doom could emerge from the Library of Cagliostro as a true rival to the Sorcerer Supreme.

Marvel regained the film rights to Doctor Doom when Disney acquired the bulk of Fox’s film and TV empire, and it is surely only a matter of time before he makes his debut in the MCU. Rather than taking the rinse-and-repeat approach taken by Fox, making Doom a science-based villain who focuses purely on Reed Richards, Marvel could do him justice by having his story begin in sorcery – and therefore position him as an enemy for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
