The X-Men have headed back to the age of the samurai in the latest preview for Marvel’s new manga-inspired comic Demon Days: X-Men #1. For a team with way too much experience in time travel shenanigans, seeing the X-Men in the past may at first seem like standard fare. But rarely have the mutants been featured in locations as old and as storied as feudal Japan.

Demon Days: X-Men is the brainchild of Japanese artist and writer Peach Momoko, who has provided variant art for Marvel books like Iron Man, Spider-Woman and Captain Marvel: The End. Momoko is a member of Marvel’s Stormbreakers, a new annual initiative announced in October 2020 that aims to highlight a diverse array of talented up-and-coming writers and artists by giving them the opportunity to reimagine popular Marvel characters. Announced as a five-part prestige miniseries, Demon Days: X-Men will see Momoko reimagine key characters from the titular team in the context of feudal Japan.

Marvel’s sneak preview of the new series, which includes both a trailer and preview pages, teases what the first issue will have in store. The preview features a version of Psylocke as a wandering swordswoman who comes upon a village terrorized by demons. One of these creatures is clearly an analogue of Venom, while the other resembles a demonic, red-hued version of Hulk. The first issue’s story will see Psylocke facing off against these demons, as well as other metahumans like an alternate version of Juggernaut.

While the story beats outlined here are definitely intriguing and it’s nice to see Psylocke get top billing as the lead character for this issue, the real star of the show is Momoko’s gorgeous art. Employing light watercolor tones within a clean, manga-inspired art style, Momoko’s vision is instantly eye-catching and it comes as a definite bonus that her unique artistic take on the Marvel universe will extend to various other familiar characters outside of the core X-Men mythos. Marvel has particularly teased that the series will feature Momoko’s take on Wolverine at some point, which is definitely enough to get many readers excited.

Momoko’s version of the X-Men is shaping up to be one of the most stylistically refreshing releases from Marvel in 2021. Fortunately, the wait to learn more about this new rendition of the famed team of mutants won’t last much longer. Demon Days: X-Men #1 will release on March 3, 2021, but eager readers can also get a sneak preview at Momoko’s imaginative new world in a six-page bonus story for King in Black #4, which will hit shelves on February 17, 2021.
