Warning: contains a preview of Winter Guard #4!
In a new Marvel Comics story, readers are reminded that while Thor might be a fan favorite, Russia has its own God of Thunder (and storms.) Perun, the Slavic God of Storms, makes a big statement in a new preview for Winter Guard #4, where he showcases his full powers following a disagreement with another powerful god on the Winter Guard team. The moment sets the stage for an epic battle between Slavic deities.
In the current Winter Guard miniseries from Marvel Comics, Yelena Belova and Alexei Shostakov (the Red Guardian) have returned to Russia to uncover the secrets of Operation Snowblind and the Winter Guard. The Red Guardian is desperate to expose classified state secrets and recently turned on Yelena to gain more information. Now, Yelena is left to face the Winter Guard herself – and soon discovers Perun, the Slavic God of Storms, is at odds with the team. The Winter Guard doesn’t take too kindly to Perun, revealing he understands the Red Guardians’ mission, as he’s called out as a traitor.
In Winter Guard #4 by Ryan Cady, Jan Bazaldua, Federico Blee, Fernando Sifuentes, and VC’s Ariana Maher, Perun admits to the Winter Guard he agrees with Alexei’s mission and wants to protect the Russian people. Red Widow immediately points the fingers at Perun, claiming he’s the Red Guardians man on the inside and a traitor. Perun claims the secrets among the group have turned them against each other. Chernobog, the Slavic God of Chaos, attacks Perun, which leads the God of Storms to unleash a thunderous attack while warning the Winter Guard about throwing “lightning” and calling “thunder” against them.
While Thor is Marvel’s most notable God of Thunder, Perun isn’t a slouch when it comes to his thunderous powers. The Slavic God of Storms is also known as a thunder and lightning god and wields a battle axe that he uses like Thor does Mjolnir. The Winter Guard features some incredibly powerful villains, but picking a fight with Perun is not a great idea – even if they believe he’s a traitor.
Red Widow accusing Perun of being a traitor seems like the beginning of the end for the Winter Guard. Making an enemy of a literal god who was previously on their side is a bad idea. Pointing fingers at Perun, who’s clearly loyal to his country, will only lead to more infighting and the eventual demise of the organization. Readers will learn more about Marvel’s other God of Thunder, Perun, taking on the Winter Guard in Winter Guard #4, which is in comic book stores December 1.
