Marvel Reveals A World Where Blade Lost in His First Movie

Warning: contains spoilers for Darkhold: Blade #1!

In the first Blade film, the vampire hunter had to contend not only with Deacon Frost, but also the La Magra, an ancient blood demon unleashed by Frost. Blade was successful in defeating Frost and the demon, but in Darkhold: Blade #1, on sale now in print and digital, readers see a world where Frost won, unleashing the blood demon on Earth, creating a world overrun by vampires.

Blade, starring Wesley Snipes as the daywalker, debuted in 1998, and while it received mixed reviews from critics, it was a success with audiences, in the end spawning two sequels, a TV series and a forthcoming reboot set in the MCU. Deacon Frost, played by Stephen Dorff, sought to merge with La Magra, an act that would make him lord of the vampires. Frost came close to achieving his goal, but Blade defeated him by shooting Frost full of anticoagulants, causing him to overload and explode, sending La Magra back to its home dimension. In the comics, Blade was recently recruited by the Scarlet Witch to help stop the growing influence of the evil Darkhold. Blade was forced to read from the book, an act that drove him insane, showing readers a dark and twisted world run by vampires—and a world where Blade has lost control, becoming an even bigger monster than the vampires he hates.

Darkholf: Blade #1, written by Daniel Kibblesmith, with art by Federico Sabbatini, colors by Rico Renzi and letters by Claytown Cowles, reveals that Deacon Frost offered himself as a host for La Magra. When the two merged, it unleashed what came to be called the “V-Wave,” turning half of the planet into vampires and depowering many of its superhumans. Society has collapsed in the V-Wave’s wake, ruled over by vampire lords such as Wilson Fisk, formerly the Kingpin.

The issue makes it clear in no uncertain terms—Blade lost. While he was successful in stopping Frost in the movie, he failed in the comics, and the world paid the price. Blade has not only lost Earth, he has lost himself, slowly edging over the precipice of no return. Blade takes a special serum that controls his vampiric urges, but it is losing its effectiveness. Blade’s inability to control his darker side was another plot point of the first film, and in Darkhold: Blade, he has lost that battle as well. The people of Earth suffered because of Blade’s inability to defeat Frost, and now they will suffer even more as Blade runs amok.

Darkhold: Blade is full of Easter Eggs harkening back to the first Blade film, but it also shows a darker vision of that movie, one where Blade lost, and the Earth fell to the vampires.
