Marvel Reveals What Captain America Smells Like

Warning! Potential spoilers for Dark Ages #3 by Marvel Comics

If you’ve ever wondered what Captain America smells like, Marvel Comics just provided an answer that’s absolutely fitting for the iconic hero. In a brand new preview for Dark Ages #3, a group of heroes tries their best to figure out what happened to Iron Man after he met (and later disappeared) with Captain America. However, Gabby Kinney reveals the Captain America who previously visited was an imposter, as they didn’t have the same “sturdy oak and duty” smell as the patriotic hero.

In Marvel’s current Dark Ages series, the power has gone out across the universe after the villainous Unmaker tried to destroy the planet. Seven years after the deadly event, Marvel heroes and villains have adapted to a world without power. Iron Man ended up making a lab in a cave, where he worked on his own powerless technology. However, after Captain America paid the hero a visit, he was revealed to be Mystique in disguise. The mutant worked for Apocalypse, who created a stronghold filled with mind-controlled heroes (courtesy of the Purple Man) where he used Magneto to create his own source of electricity. Now, Iron Man’s allies are investigating what happened to their fellow hero.

In a brand new preview for Dark Ages #3 by Tom Taylor, Iban Coello, Brian Reber, and VC’s Joe Sabino, a group of Marvel heroes including Blade, Wolverine, the Human Torch, and Luke Cage end up at Tony Stark’s cave lab. Pepper Potts tells the heroes that Steve Rogers came by and went for a walk with Tony, but neither ever came back. Gabby Kinney, aka Honey Badger, quickly notes Captain America was never there at all.

Pepper asks Gabby what she means and the young hero tells her that “Captain America smells like a study oak table and duty. Someone else was here.” Wolverine quickly identifies the scent, telling the group of heroes it belongs to the shape-shifting Mystique.

It’s fitting – yet not entirely surprising – Gabby identifies Captain America’s smell as a “sturdy oak table and duty.” After all, Captain America is as sturdy as they come and committed to his duty as a hero. However, if Taylor had written that Captain America smells like apple pie and freedom, it would have also been an acceptable answer – as it also fits the patriotic hero. Readers can learn more about Captain America and what he smells when Dark Ages #3 by Marvel Comics comes to comic book stores on Wednesday.
