Marvel Suggests Doctor Strange Could Beat Thanos (But Only If He’s Evil)

Thanos (Josh Brolin) beat Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) when they faced off in Avengers: Infinity War, but Marvel’s What If…? suggests the outcome might’ve been different if Strange was a villain. Since his introduction to the MCU back in 2016’s Doctor Strange, the surgeon-turned-superhero has grown into one of its most powerful characters. With an array of magical spells and abilities at his fingertips, there aren’t too many who can match Strange’s power, but it wasn’t enough to beat a Mad Titan boosted by the Infinity Stones and Gauntlet, and yet there’s now an intriguing “what if” thrown into the mix.
In What If…? episode 4, “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead Of His Hands,” the Sorcerer Supreme of Marvel Comics (and perhaps the MCU, though that’s to be confirmed) is sent down a dark path following the death of Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams). Strange’s misguided attempts to bring Christine back from the dead don’t have the result he desires, but do make some significant changes to his character. As he takes energy from a variety of cosmic beings and learns an increasing amount of ancient magic and knowledge, he grows much stronger than he’s ever been in the main MCU.
When it comes time for the actual Doctor Strange of this timeline to face off with Doctor Strange Supreme, the “good” version of the character cannot compete with his evil self. The dark Doctor Strange has become exponentially more powerful than even he may have ever imagined, and in the end it’s only his conscience that can stop him. He becomes so strong, in fact, and so well versed in magic, with mastery of many of the mystic arts to the point he is manipulating the universe and bringing about its destruction, that it’d difficult to imagine many who could stand in his way, including Thanos. Had the Strange who absorbed so much energy faced off with the Mad Titan, then chances are he would’ve emerged victorious.
There have been few who can go up against Thanos in the MCU; Doctor Strange himself fares reasonably well in Infinity War, thanks to some spells that allow him to confound the villain, but it’s ultimately nowhere near enough. With Marvel’s What If…? taking him to a whole other power level, though, then it suggests he would be able to get the win. Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch almost defeated Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, operating at a power level higher than the MCU’s Doctor Strange (and driven by grief and rage); with this evil Doctor Strange similarly full of magical energy but seemingly even stronger still than Wanda Maximoff was there, then it stands to reason he’d be able to beat him if they faced off. Thanos is incredibly strong, but the amount of abilities this Strange has means he’d be near-impossible to defeat, because there’d surely be something in his bag of tricks that would get the better of him.
This also suggests a common trade-off of being able to defeat Thanos, implying that there’s always a great cost in beating him, whether it’s losing a loved one like Wanda, losing some of your humanity like Doctor Strange does in What If…?, or losing your life like Iron Man. Of course, for Doctor Strange the notion is purely hypothetical, but it does point to just how much more powerful he could become. Whether or not he is officially the Sorcerer Supreme of the MCU remains to be seen for now, but with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness expected to take his powers to all new heights – if not in the same, evil way as seen here – then there should be another major power boost for Stephen Strange on the horizon.
