Marvel Theory Lokis Disney Show Visits Early MCU Movies

Disney+’s Loki TV show has been confirmed to feature time travel, just as Avengers: Endgame before it and while it’s still unclear how the God of Mischief will use it, there remains the exciting possibility that he could end up visiting the early movies of the MCU. If this is the case, it could affect the future of both the character and future films in the Marvel franchise.

The only footage of Loki released so far is a tiny clip lasting just a few seconds, which premiered with additional footage from fellow Disney+ shows The Falcon and The Winter Solider and WandaVision. The show will form part of Marvel’s Phase 4, which restructures how previous phases have worked and takes established movie characters to the smaller screen of Disney’s streaming platform. Loki is so far the only confirmed character, but the exciting cast has added the likes of Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E Grant, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw already.

While all of Marvel’s ventures – both film and TV – are kept tightly under wraps, it has been confirmed that Loki takes place after Endgame when he has a lucky escape with the Tesseract and that Loki will go back in time to events in human history. But because of his selfish and mischievous nature, there is every chance he could travel back to early MCU films that he was a part of to stir up chaos and try to affect the timeline to his own advantage.

Loki’s Disney+ Show Will Include Time Travel

Little has been revealed about the plot of Loki, but one of the things we know for sure is that in Avengers: Endgame, Loki runs off with the Tesseract, possibly creating a timeline where he can essentially do whatever he wants without affecting the main MCU timeline. Endgame’s Captain America ending complicates whether he would have any impact, to a certain extent, but Loki has a better explanation for timeline branches. As long as he still has the Tesseract, he can open portals to any dimension, giving him the freedom to go where he pleases. Showrunners have confirmed that time travel is a key component of the show and that Loki uses the Tesseract to travel through time and alter human history. At this point, of course, Tom Hiddleston’s trickster is still basically a villain and not yet an anti-hero, so he’ll likely have evil plans in mind.

Marvel has already warmed audiences up to the idea of time travel through Avengers: Endgame, so it makes sense for them to explore it in Loki. That is particularly advantageous as it means the show will not restrict the character or the plot to one place and instead can set up a new story for Loki that could set him apart from his actions in The Avengers, as well as creating room to explore his own past adventures that may not have been seen on screen yet.

Theory: Loki Visits Early MCU Movies In His Disney+ Show

Given that it is established that Loki has the ability to time travel, he could absolutely go to different points in the MCU in a similar way to what the Avengers do in Avengers: Endgame. And if he visits important events in human history then it’s likely that he will also visit important events in his own history. In addition to the Tesseract, Loki could also use the quantum realm to travel in time and space, essentially pulling off an Avengers-style time heist and going back to moments of significance for him or depending on the core plot of the series, moments that hold importance to the MCU and its future.

It has already been confirmed that a new timeline was created when the God Of Mischief escaped with the Tesseract, which means in the original MCU timeline Loki was still killed by Thanos at the start of Avengers: Infinity War. The fact that a new timeline is set up leaves a lot of room for the creators to have fun with where Loki may end up if he starts jumping through different historical events. Producers have confirmed that he’s a man on the run – presumably from the Marvel universe’s temporal police force – it’s clear some of his adventures will be in the name of escape. And if he is seeking sanctuary or assistance, it makes sense that he would first turn to events and people he knows he can rely on or at least account for, which makes returning to past MCU events likely.

Early MCU Movies Loki Could Visit

If Loki time travels to early MCU movies, he has plenty of significant events to choose from as his target. He might visit the films he’s most involved with, like Thor, or he could cause even more chaos for the Avengers. Loki is in possession of the Tesseract and, strictly speaking, there is nothing stopping him from seeking out the other Infinity Stones from different parts of history. At this point in time, he is working with Thanos and knows his goal, so to sneak in and steal the Stones for himself might well make sense. He could also go back to the time of Thor or Thor: Dark World and changing the timeline to benefit him. He could make himself the King of Asgard, replacing Odin at a weaker point during Thor’s exile on Earth or he could even change the events that led up to his defeat and capture in The Avengers, as that would fit his selfish personality.

He could also visit previous Avengers movies, attempting to take out younger versions of the heroes to stop them from uniting to defeat him. Loki was the main antagonist of The Avengers, but his roots go even further than that. As well as confronting pieces of his past, Loki could reflect on his issues with Thor and Odin and his upbringing. If he knows about the importance of the Infinity Stones, which he should at this point, he may go back to places of importance like Camp Lehigh where the Tesseract was hidden and experimented on during the events of Captain America: The First Avenger. Perhaps he could go there seeking answers to help him control the Stone better?

What Visiting Early MCU Movies Would Mean For Loki (& His Future)

Loki is known for causing chaos across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from trying to invade earth in The Avengers to posing as Odin in Thor: Ragnarok. If he meddles with time in Loki, it could affect his future in the MCU. Meddling with the multiverse could mean Loki causes the Multiverse Of Madness kicking off serious repercussions for Doctor Strange 2. If Loki’s behavior does lead to a catastrophic event in the multiverse, that would have a major impact on future MCU films, which is exactly the sort of tie the Disney+ shows need to help legitimize them.

Then there’s the prospect of Loki potentially having a part to play in Thor: Love & Thunder. Thor: Ragnarok ended with Thor and Loki finally on good terms, only for that to be ruined in Avengers: Endgame, and this Loki is bound to have some animosity towards his brother. He has, after all, just thwarted his attempt to invade Earth along with his Avenger friends. Loki perhaps meddling with Thor’s reality and attempting to instil his changes to the main timeline using the Tesseract in order to gain Asgard in Thor’s absence in the future could make a lot of sense.

Loki’s actions could also have an impact on other Marvel Disney+ shows, particularly WandaVision. Photos from the set have fueled rumors of Lady Loki appearing in the series to replace Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, played by Sophia Di Martino, which could lead right into the multiverse or another timeline in which Loki is a woman. Both versions of Loki could set up the events of Thor: Love and Thunder, and this could even contribute to Jane Foster’s transformation into Thor. Fundamentally, the appeal of having a younger Loki who has not gone through his redemption arc leading up to his death at the hands of Thanos is that he can play the trickster not only in Loki as a show, but potentially on the whole MCU timeline.
