The popular Marvel trading cards of the 1990s offered fans a whole glimpse into Marvel Comics lore, collecting their favorite characters, each immortalized in their own trading card. The cards provided deeper insight into the characters themselves, with their biographies and power levels often printed on the back and an epically detailed picture of the character on the front. Now, one fan has taken the beloved trading cards to a new level, turning some of them from still drawings to impressive animations.

The Marvel Universe Trading Cards were first introduced in 1990 and ran for five series through 1994. Series I consisted of 167 cards, each with a different hero or villain on the front with their fact file on the back. After the success of the first series, Marvel launched a character-specific line with “Spider-Man Presents,” which saw Spidey conduct humorous interviews with other members of the Marvel Universe. With the first two series proving to be hits, Marvel continued producing the cards through the mid-90s, making collectibles out of hundreds of the publisher’s most famous characters. Now, a whole new generation is getting an introduction to the throwback Marvel Comics relic.

In a recent Twitter post from Joel Furtado, the user brought four Marvel trading cards to life, transforming the cards’ still images into brief animations. The first hero depicted is Thor, starting off in a crouch before taking an imposing stance while summoning a powerful bolt of lightning with Mjolnir. The next is Reed Richards, AKA Mr. Fantastic, who is working in his laboratory and using his powers of controlled plasticity to assist in his experiments. The third, Iron Man, is seen flying through the streets of New York in his iconic armor. Lastly is the Phoenix, who is animated showing off her immense power with an explosion emitting from her body in the cosmic Phoenix form.

Throwback to these Marvel 1991 cards I animated a few years back for fun…need to get back into animation .#ironman #tonystark #thor #mrfantastic #fantasticfour #phoenix #xmen #scarletwitch #avengers #animation #cartoon #90s #marvel #comics pic.twitter.com/gHPT7zV4BO

The animation is undeniably an amazing tribute to the Marvel characters and it continues the tradition of the original cards. Each animated action perfectly summarized the powerset of the individual characters just as the trading cards had done through written-out fact files and power scales. The animation literally put the words on the cards in action, giving fans an example of what the heroes can do in each animation.

These animations are perfect love letters to an era of comics past. While the cards are no longer being produced, this tweet alone is proof that there are still a lot of people out of there that have a special place in their heart for the Marvel Universe Trading Cards.
