When Marvel’s Avengers first came out, fans were excited that the Avengers, one of the most popular properties in all of pop culture, was finally getting the AAA game that they have waited years for.
One of the best elements of the game was its single-player campaign, which told an original story, featuring characters like Kamala Khan and M.O.D.O.K. As new characters have joined the ever-expanding roster of Avengers, each new one expanded the campaign further. Whether they give players a great chance to play as their favorite characters or tease something big coming in the story, some missions stand out as the best.
10 I Want To Be An Avenger!
Like some of the best Marvel video games before it, many fans were hoping the developers had replicated their formula and created some great characters and an immersive story. Marvel’s Avengers did not disappoint, as players get the chance to play as Kamala Khan. When walking through the A-Day festivities, the mission showed some great character moments for her right from the start.
Between the fun little mini-games fans can play, collecting comic books of the Avengers, or just walking around and absorbing the Avengers’ history, there are tons of fun tidbits that any Marvel fan will love. On top of that, Kamala has her first interactions with her idols, showing the superfan in her that anyone playing this game can relate to.
9 House Call
One thing that Tony Stark has always been known for is his desire for the spotlight and the flair he puts into everything he does. That all changed after A-Day when Tony went into hiding at Golden Acres, his old Stark family compound.
When Kamala and Bruce find Tony, he is far from himself. He’s been living in an RV, completely removed from his tech and the world he left behind. Seeing the always charismatic Tony Stark not only defeated but angry at his failures is a very compelling side of Tony.
8 To Stand Alone
If it wasn’t known to everyone playing yet that Kamala was the main character and one of the best heroes in this Avengers story, this was the mission that made it clear. Kamala gained her powers through the Terrigen Reactor explosion, but she wasn’t the only one, as many others received these enhancements, and became targets of A.I.M.
Kamala makes it her mission to go to a prison facility and rescue all of the Inhumans there before A.I.M. can experiment on them further. This mission showed Kamala’s drive to be a hero and gave fans their first signs of what would eventually lead to her becoming an official Avenger.
7 Once An Avenger…
Since the goal of the story is to reassemble the Avengers, the reintroductions of the heroes should be memorable ones. Of all those, the God of Thunder certainly has the most memorable entrance.
The Avengers are attempting to stop A.I.M. from taking down the Chimera, but the fight takes a turn in their favor when Thor enters the battle. Thor had given up Mjolnir and left the hero world behind, so to see him call to his mighty weapon and fight alongside his teammates again for the first time in five years was a moment fans were waiting for.
6 Testing 1… 2… 3…
Once the Avengers find out that A.I.M.’s secret lab is in space, Tony Stark builds a suit that can launch him there. As if flying through space as Iron Man to the music of Iron Maiden wasn’t cool enough, what he finds in that lab changes the game.
Very few fans truly believed that Steve Rogers was dead following the events of A-Day, as it was more of a when, not an if, for when he would re-enter the story. The revelation of finding him frozen in space is a major moment, and the subsequent reactions of the other heroes when they welcome him home is the emotional gut punch this story needed.
5 By Force Of Mind
As players made their way through the campaign, the big question remained as to when they would finally get a crack at the Marvel comic villain, M.O.D.O.K. With our team of Avengers finally reassembled, it was time to see what this final boss battle would look like.
M.O.D.O.K. did not disappoint, as his boss battle not only had an interesting gameplay dynamic, it also gave each of the Avengers a moment to shine as fans played through. The use of the Kree Sentry in battle also set the game up going forward to take the story to entirely new heights.
4 Agents Of Thunder
During the main campaign, there are several character-specific story missions called Iconic Missions. These are used mostly as good character development for our heroes, but Thor has one that sets up a potentially interesting plot point for future content.
As Thor stops The Woken followers from opening their own Bifrost, their leader, fake Thor, escapes before Thor can catch him. As he disappears, green fire in the form of footprints is all that is left. Thor exclaims “brother,” insinuating Loki’s involvement in the story sometime in the future.
3 Family Reunion
After a few months, the game delivered a brand new operation to continue the story, featuring Kate Bishop, the first post-launch hero (and hopefully not the last since Marvel Avengers fans are hoping developers include these unplayable characters). Kate reaches out to the Avengers because she is looking for Hawkeye and trying to rescue him from A.I.M.
In the finale of the mission chain, players time travel to battle a new boss in the Super Adaptoid and rescue Clint. The biggest takeaway from the mission is that viewers learn of how the Kree invaded Earth in the future, and Hawkeye warns them that it’s time to start preparing now.
2 My Life As A Weapon
Since the game was announced, fans had been asking the developers “Where’s Hawkeye?” It was only a matter of time before he appeared, and his operation offered some great gameplay moments.
One of the additions that got fans excited was the addition of Hawkeye’s famed pet sidekick, Lucky the Pizza Dog. Players go on a mission through the Brooklyn level, interacting with some of Hawkeye’s neighbors to rescue Lucky from A.I.M. This was the first time the game featured NPCs within the levels, a feature that hopefully not only sticks around but becomes a regular one too.
1 Beating The Odds
Monica Rappaccini has been a major threat throughout the story, and in the most recent drop of story content, her story seems to have finally reached its conclusion. Players take on Monica and her use of the Cosmic Cube to finally put a stop to A.I.M. and the Scientist Supreme.
Monica’s boss fight is one of the most unique ones in the game, but with her defeat, a new foe could be making their way into the game. In the final cutscene, Hank Pym’s robot assistant R.O.Y. puts the cube in containment, but then he comes back and opens the containment to just look at it ominously. Fans are eager to see if this leads to the involvement of Ultron down the road with their planned future Marvel Avengers DLC drops.
