Marvels Avengers Is Disappointing Publisher Square Enix Admits

In a statement published alongside its annual report, Square Enix has publicly acknowledged the “disappointing” performance of Marvel’s Avengers. Despite the worldwide success of Marvel’s cinematic universe, things have not gone well for Crystal Dynamics’ live-service title since it launched in August of 2020. Subpar reviews combined with a series of post-launch delays for content like Kate Bishop hurt initial sales for the title, which is still struggling to find its feet over a year post-launch.

As reported by VideoGamesChronicle, Square Enix has finally acknowledged that the game is not living up to its expectations. As part of the company’s annual report, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda noted that the title “has unfortunately not proven as successful as we would have liked.” The Covid-19 pandemic was noted as one of the issues the game faced, with the need to “transition to work-from-home” having hampered production during the later stages of the game’s development.

While exact sales numbers for the game are unknown, Marvel’s Avengers struggled at launch, costing publisher Square Enix millions. 2021 appears to have been a far better year for the title, though. As reported by Paul Tassi on Forbes, Marvel’s Avengers has sold surprisingly well throughout the year, sitting as the #7 best-selling title over the past 12 months (as of August 2021). Crystal Dynamics also recently revealed an updated roadmap for future planned content, which now stretches well into 2022. Despite its rocky start, it would seem that Marvel’s Avengers is following in the footsteps of other live-service titles before it, learning from mistakes while steady improvements are made over time. With continued support, Square Enix may yet have a hit on their hands.
