Marvels Avengers Will Have CoOp Play & Cinematic Storytelling

The recently announced Marvel’s Avengers game from Square Enix, Marvel, and developer Crystal Dynamics, has just had key information about it revealed by the E3 Coliseum website, which stated that the upcoming title would feature co-op gameplay and cinematic storytelling. First announced in late 2017, the game that was initially known as Avengers Project would get a brief reveal trailer before being completely absent from every Square Enix conference afterwards, only recently resurfacing thanks to rumors that posited its presence at Square Enix’s E3 2019 conference.

Those rumors would end up being true, as Marvel’s Avengers was finally given a proper name yesterday alongside the confirmation it would be a feature of Square Enix’s upcoming presentation. The long-awaited result of a collaboration between Marvel and Square Enix will be developed by Crystal Dynamics, the studio most famous for the Tomb Raider series, in partnership with Eidos Montreal, the developer behind the Deus Ex franchise. With such an impressive collection of talent working on the game, there are lofty expectations associated with Marvel’s Avengers, which for better or worse has been allowed to run rampant in the imaginations of fans waiting for information for nearly a year-and-a-half.

The official reveal of the game didn’t actually bring any information with it about the title itself, though, which makes the E3 Coliseum website’s description the first we’ve ever gotten for the game. Based on what’s run down on the website, fans can expect a title that will support co-op play between up to four players, while also providing players with a cinematic experience in line with what they might expect from the MCU. Here’s the full description as it appears on the E3 Coliseum page:

“Embrace your powers and join key members of the development team at Crystal Dynamics and the creative team at Marvel Games as they talk exclusively about the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers. This is the defining Avengers gaming experience: an epic action-adventure that combines cinematic storytelling with continuous single-player and co-operative gameplay. Moderated by Andrea Rene, assemble in teams up to four players, master extraordinary abilities, customize your heroes to fit your playstyle, and combine powers to defend an ever-expanding world under constant threat.”

Neither Crystal Dynamics or Eidos Montreal is renowned for their prowess in making cooperative action titles, so Marvel’s Avengers will be a new endeavor for both that doesn’t really have a precedent in either company’s backlogs. That’s exciting, but also a little scary, since the first AAA Avengers game will need to be a hit to satisfy those who’ve waited for it for years. The description posted on the E3 Coliseum page matches what little information we’ve received about Marvel’s Avengers up to this point, too, as it’s been described as “ambitious.”

All of the descriptions in the world can’t really substitute for a solid gameplay trailer, which is what fans will be hoping for during Square Enix’s E3 2019 presentation. Even if the trailer ends up being largely cinematic, having an idea of the direction of Marvel’s Avengers, alongside what it actually looks like, would be a huge help in assuaging fears that it might fail to live up to expectations. We’ve only got a few weeks to go before the world knows what Marvel’s Avengers is about, and superhero fans everywhere are waiting with bated breath.
