Marvels BLADE Once Murdered Vampire Santa Claus

When Marvel’s famous vampire hunter Blade takes a break from the vamp slaying business, goes shopping a few days before Christmas, and discovers one of Santa’s helpers has a mouth full of fangs, he realizes he must murder Santa Claus.

After Blade a.k.a. Eric Brooks’ traumatic birth when his mother Tara is bitten by a vampire named Deacon Frost, he spends the rest of his life hunting down blood-suckers like Frost. Because Blade is a vampire/human hybrid, he’s given the gift of all of the vampire’s strengths and none of their weaknesses, which even makes him a match for Marvel’s Wolverine. As a result of being a hybrid, vampires give Blade the nickname Daywalker because unlike the rest of the blood-thirsty beasts, he is not hindered by sunlight. Even though Blade is part vampire, he is consistently trying to maintain his humanity. Hence, why he is shown shopping in Blade #4, trying to get his mind off of being a criminal and murderer in the eyes of the public. But just as Brooks is trying to distract his mind, he goes head-to-head with a powerful villain.

As he’s shopping, he begins to smell the stench of a vampire drifting from a child sitting on Santa’s lap. Because Blade is willing to do anything to eradicate the threat of blood-suckers, he immediately confronts Santa and tells him he wants to have a word with him outside. When Santa denies Blade’s request and his eyes begin to glow red, he recognizes that the creature is Animus, a level 9 demon and soul-jumper-possessing anyone he desires to control. Luckily, Blade doesn’t have a soul-meaning Animus can’t control him. But before Blade and Animus duel one another, the level 9 demon takes control of the child, believing Blade will not try to kill a child. Next, Animus controls a nearby police officer and forces the officer to shoot himself in the head.

Then, Animus takes control of another man and forces him to rip out his eyes. After jumping from one soul to the next, Animus resumes control of Santa’s helper and fights Blade to the death. But, just when Animus thinks he has the upper hand, Blade reminds him that the store is empty. Meaning, Animus is no longer able to soul-jump. After telling Animus his soul-jumping days are over, he whips out a gun and shoots Animus as well as Santa Claus in the head. After shooting Santa in the head, Blade tears up knowing there is no better way to stop Animus and save the soul he is taking control over. As Santa lays on the ground dead, Blade recalls that the true name of Santa’s helper is Dan and realizes it’s a shame that this man can no longer bring the joy of Christmas to family and friends.

It’s Blade’s perseverance to maintain his humanity that makes him a lovable character. With Phase Four of the MCU just around the corner and with Marshala Ali being cast as Blade, the hype is real for fans of the character as well as the Blade comic storylines. Considering the late 90s and early 2000s Blade Trilogy has transformed Marvel’s hero in the comics forever, there’s no doubt that the next Blade film will do the same.
