Marvels Canadian Superhero Team Is Perfect For The MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has gained a well-deserved reputation as the kingmaker of Marvel Comics. As a direct result of their prominent appearances in the MCU, characters like Iron Man, Thanos, and the Guardians of the Galaxy went from being relatively obscure characters recognized by only the most dedicated of comic fans to some of the most recognizable characters in media history. Having proven its ability to bring new popularity to little-known characters and concepts, many of Marvel’s heroes and villains have found themselves slated for an MCU debut.

Shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, rumors began to circulate that Alpha Flight, a Canadian superhero team with strong ties to the X-Men, were scheduled to make their MCU debut soon. Although an Alpha Flight film or television series has yet to be announced, their introduction would not only serve as an unconventional way to introduce both mutants and certain X-Men into the MCU, but it could also help implement some much-needed diversity into the franchise.

Marvels Canadian Superhero Team Is Perfect For The MCU

First introduced in X-Men #120 (by Chris Clairemont, John Byrne, Terry Austin, Glynis Wein, and Tom Orzechowski), Alpha Flight served as a state-sponsored team of superheroes who answer to the Canadian government. Created by Department H, a division of the Canadian Department of National Defense that monitored all superhuman activity within Canada, Alpha Flight has had many members over the years. It has even included Wolverine, who became the team’s first leader shortly after he received his adamantium skeleton from the Weapon X program. Although Alpha Flight’s initial interaction with the X-Men saw them trying to capture Wolverine and force him to rejoin them, the two teams went on to strike up a long-standing friendship that has endured to this day.

Although they may not be as well-known as the X-Men, many of Alpha Flight’s members are mutants, and having them appear in the MCU before their more famous counterparts could allow for mutants to be introduced in a more casual and controlled manner. This could help anchor the concept within the MCU and pave the way for the introduction of the many mutants that make up the X-Men. The team’s Canadian origins could also allow the MCU to explore its world through the perspective of a country outside of the United States. Canada’s radically different approach to monitoring and recruiting superpowered individuals provides interesting new opportunities for stories that focus on political themes and concepts that haven’t been explored in the MCU.

However, the key factor that would make Alpha Flight’s entry into the MCU so memorable is the impressive diversity found within the team. While all of Alpha Flight’s past and current members are Canadian citizens, they cover a wide spectrum of nationalities, sexualities, and backgrounds that have seen little to no representation within the MCU. Two of Alpha Flight’s longest-running members, Shaman and Snowbird, are not only members of First Nation tribes, but each of them adheres to the indigenous spiritual beliefs of their tribe, and their introduction to the MCU could expand upon the franchise’s already-existing representation of Native Americans. Another longtime member, Northstar, was one of the first openly gay characters to ever appear in comics, and his introduction to the MCU would severe an excellent continuation of the positive LGBTQ+ representation that began with The Eternals’ Phastos.

Several members of Alpha Flight, including Puck and Aurora, have physical and mental disabilities that, while at times inconvenient, don’t negatively affect their ability to be heroes or maintain healthy relationships. Having already taken major steps in positively representing deaf culture The Eternals’ Makkari and Hawkeye’s Echo, introducing characters like Puck and Aurora would go a long way in breaking down harmful stereotypes regarding physical and mental disabilities.

With recent controversies like the Walt Disney Company making donations to the authors of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill fresh in the minds of fans, fans of the MCU and other Disney properties are holding the company to its public promise to include more diversity in its content. Through the introduction of Alpha Flight, the MCU could stay true to its parent company’s promise and introduce a unique cast of heroes who could bring both interesting storylines positive representation to a broader audience.
