Marvels Cowboy SpiderMan Returns in SpiderVerse

Warning: SPOILERS for Spider-Verse #4

Marvel’s latest Spider-Verse event has Spider-Man Miles Morales traveling to different earths and meeting different alternate Spiders, trying to find a missing Annie May Parker. So far, he’s meet new Spiders such as a Spider-Gang, a Spider-Monster, and even a wasteland driving Spider known as Lord Spider. Miles has also reunited with Spiders from the first Spider-Verse event. In Spider-Verse #4, Miles reunites with Web-Slinger, the Cowboy Spider-Man of Earth-31913.

Thus far in this new Spider-Verse event, a Spider known as Spider-Zero is asking for Miles’ help in locating Annie May Parker. With the Web of Destiny being corrupted, Annie May is the only one who can fix it. As a result, Miles has been jumping from Earth to Earth, looking for Annie May and helping any Spiders he meets along the way. So far he’s meet up with Spider-Ma’am to fight evil doppelgängers. He also jumps to the Earth of Peni Parker, pilot of the SP//dr mech suit. Together they fought an alternate version of Kraven the Hunter. Now, Miles jumps to the Wild West to team up with the Web-Slinger.

In Spider-Verse #4 written by Taran Killam (of SNL fame) and art by Juan Gedeon, fans are reintroduced to the Cowboy Spider-Man on his home of Earth-31913 stopping a train robbery. In classic fashion, the cowboy vigilante known as the Web-Slinger dispatches the robbers just before the train is blown off the tracks courtesy of dynamite. He then crosses paths with Miles. After Miles gets him up to speed on his mission, they learn that a gang led by a man known Garganza El Escorpion is terrorizing a village. Web-Slinger and Miles make short work of Garganza and his gang. With the village saved, Miles jumps to the next Earth for his next adventure.

It’s surprisingly entertaining to get a closer look at such a fun alternate Spider-character. Web-Slinger has all the typical trappings of a cowboy with an added spider flair. While one of his revolvers is a normal gun, the other shoots webs with rapid speed. His mask is a bandana, and his horse hilariously is masked as well. Furthermore, Web-Slinger’s horse was bitten by the same spider, so they share a mind link Web-Slinger refers to as his “rider sense”. Fans should be able to tell that writer Taran Killam had a lot of fun while writing this issue. They’re pretty funny western riffs on spider powers but Web-Slinger treats them pretty seriously as common methods of fighting outlaws despite them being even more outlandish than normal web-slinging arguably already is, which makes it even more entertaining.

Without a doubt, the Cowboy Spider-Man is one of the best alternate Spiders to come out of the Spider-Verse events. With any luck, one could imagine seeing a whole mini-series based just on the Web-Slinger releasing one day. Better yet, maybe he could make an appearance in the next Spider-Verse film? It seems like he would fit in pretty well. In any case, Miles’ stop to the Wild West in Spider-Verse was a fun and welcome one.

Spider-Verse #4 is on comic book store shelves now.
