The recently released Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game includes a cheeky Deus Ex Easter egg. Developer Eidos-Montréal is best known for its work on the latter series, but following the disappointing sales of its last Deus Ex entry and parent company Square Enix gaining the rights to make some Marvel games, the developer is now tackling Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Nonetheless, the studio hasn’t forgotten its roots.

There is no shortage of Easter eggs to be found in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, as one may expect from a Marvel game. The developers recently explained how they got the Chewbacca Easter egg in Marvel’s GotG, something that is actually quite critical to the character of Peter Quill. It’s one of many pop culture nods, particularly from Disney’s wealth of IP, but Eidos-Montréal made sure to pay tribute to its own history through another in-game Easter egg.

Twitter user Haruspis discovered a subtle nod to Deus Ex in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. In between one of the chapters, the player can enter the bathroom on the Milano and take a shower. Peter then wipes the fogged-up glass and looks out into the bathroom, seemingly pondering something. To the average player, this may seem like nothing but a quiet character beat. In reality, it’s a subtle parallel to Deus Ex, seeing as Adam Jensen does the exact same series of actions in his shower.

Eidos-Montréal has referenced its previous game a few times throughout the lead-up to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The developer confirmed that Marvel’s GotG has more dialogue than Deus Ex, likely due to the seemingly never-ending banter among the band of space misfits. Even though Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has some dialogue options, it’s less of a branching RPG like Deus Ex. Eidos-Montréal’s take on the galactic heroes depicts them as incessantly chatty during missions, and there are optional conversations to be had on the Milano.

Regardless, the Easter egg is a fun homage to Eidos’ other beloved series. There are probably other Deus Ex references sprinkled throughout the game, especially considering both are sci-fi stories – albeit one has more fantastical elements than the other. Eidos-Montréal packed the game full of details with things like comedic post-it notes from the Guardians, a number of 80s Easter eggs in Star Lord’s room, and much more. Eidos has yet to confirm whether or not it will return to the Deus Ex franchise, but if Guardians of the Galaxy is a commercial hit, it seems likely Square Enix will have the developer double-down on its Marvel series.
