Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy SpiderMan Easter Eggs Explained

Eagle-eyed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy fans will notice that there are multiple nods to one of Marvel’s most iconic characters, Spider-Man. Although the web-slinger himself is not in the game, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy features references to a ton of characters in the overall Marvel universe. It only makes sense that Eidos-Montreal would also include Spider-Man amongst the plethora of referenced heroes and villains.

[Warning: The following contains some SPOILERS for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.]

There’s a number of Easter eggs in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, including some that reference the wider Marvel Universe and others that point out aspects of ’80s popular culture. The likes of Chewbacca, Tron, and more are all referenced in Peter Quill’s childhood bedroom at the very start of the game, but there’s one reference in there that will likely raise some eyebrows. In the 1980s sections of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter can find a newspaper that seemingly alludes to Spider-Man.

The newspaper features a logo very similar to the Daily Bugle, but it’s called the “Weekly Bugle”. It also mentions something about a vigilante, but the paper is too obscured to extract any other details. It’s easy to shrug it off as just one of many items and Easter eggs in Peter’s room in Marvel’s GotG, but the name and logo of the paper seem to be too much of a coincidence. Not to mention, the Spider-Man references don’t stop there.

Is Spider-Man In The Same Universe As The Guardians of the Galaxy?

When traveling through the celestial cortex after meeting with Cosmo on Knowhere, the Guardians hear things from different universes and realities. One of these brief audio cues is a random civilian calling out for Spider-Man by name. Peter then believes that the noise was coming from Earth, but it’s unclear which reality it’s in. The fact he specifically believes it to be from Earth suggests that he may already be familiar with Spider-Man, possibly from the newspapers in his bedroom. Further still, Easter eggs in Marvel’s GOTG reference Spider-Man villain Venom and the symbiotes more generally. The Flash Thompson incarnation of Venom joined the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics, and could potentially make an ideal candidate to join the team should Eidos-Montreal develop a sequel.

It’s unlikely that Marvel’s GotG will crossover with Insomniac’s Marvel games, but it might still be possible for the two series to exist in the same continuity. Although Peter Parker wasn’t born in the 1980s in Insomniac’s Marvel timeline, the vigilante referenced in GotG’s Weekly Bugle article could be another New York hero, like Daredevil. Of course, with the celestial cortex referencing different realities, it could just also be the case that Square Enix’s Guardians exist in a different universe altogether, and that the Spider-Man being referenced is one who belongs to a different dimension. The game also seems to suggest Marvel’s GotG and Marvel’s Avengers are in different universes, but could crossover via the celestial cortex in the future.

It’s much less certain as to where and when the Spider-Man of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is from, though. could it be the Insomniac Games version of the webhead, the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers version of Spider-Man, or an entirely separate incarnation of the character? There’s no telling right now and perhaps fans will never actually know. It may be nothing more than a nod to the larger Marvel universe, but it could also be a more purposeful reference. Even if there isn’t a plan to crossover with Spider-Man anytime soon, it’s possible that the seed was planted in the game so the door is open for it to happen in the future.
