Marvels KISS Comic Was Inked With The Bands BLOOD (Seriously)

Lots of artists talk about pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into their work, but KISS may have taken the phrase to its most literal extreme. In the pages of 1977’s Marvel Comics Super Special #1, the band members had their actual blood drawn to be mixed with the ink used to print the original run.

The book sees the four musicians – Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss – facing off with the likes of Mephisto and Doctor Doom (and also features cameos from the likes of The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, and The Defenders), but leave it to a band like KISS to make that possibly the least interesting aspect of this story. While they’re known for their theatrical and often blood-dripping wild antics, this was the first time KISS would literally leave their blood on the hands of their fans, with the book’s cover boasting it as being, “printed in real KISS blood.” The promotional idea was to bolster the book’s sales, though even Gene Simmons doesn’t remember whose idea it actually was, to begin with. So during a 1977 concert stop, the band flew to New York to have their blood drawn – in makeup and costumes, of course – with the entire process being documented by a cameraman.

Even by KISS standards, the idea seemed so unbelievable that fact-checking website Snopes had to chime in on the topic, verifying it to be true. And just to erase any potential doubt of the process, the entire ordeal was even overseen and authenticated by an actual notary public.

This is to certify that KISS members, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, Paul Stanley and Peter Criss, have each donated blood which is being collectively mixed with the red ink to be used for the first issue of the Marvel/KISS comics. The blood was extracted on February 21st, 1977 at Nassau Coliseum and has been under guarded refrigeration until this day when it was delivered to the Borden Ink plant in Depew, New York.

The book contains a four-paged column entitled “Blood on the Plates,” by writer Stark Raven, exploring the sorts of sacrifices an artist should be expected to make for their work, concluding that this process forged a special relationship with readers: “When this magazines (sic) goes to press, those vials will be lovingly poured into the vats of ink, making this the first comic book ever to be printed in blood. A bond exists now and forevermore among KISS, their fans, and Marvel Comics. A blood-brotherhood of truth, justice, and rock ‘n’ roll.” KISS die-hards who bought the book were also treated to exclusive interviews, candid photos and more.

Copies of the original, blood-inked Marvel Comics Super Special #1 are still available on the secondary market. As of the time of writing, copies are available on eBay, though they’ll cost you. Not blood, just money, thankfully.
