Marvel’s Midnight Suns Missed An Opportunity To Include Sandman

The trailer for Marvel’s Midnight Suns first hit the internet three months ago, but it might have missed the perfect opportunity to include one of Marvel’s iconic villains, the Sandman. The trailer begins by introducing some of the playable characters in the game while the familiar beats of Metallica’s Enter Sandman begin to play in the background. The trailer then gives the information of the song in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, introducing Alessia Cara & The Warning’s cover. It’s a fitting track for the supernatural premise of Midnight Suns, but fans of Marvel and Spider-Man could be forgiven for thinking this was also a cheeky way of teasing the appearance of the Sandman too.

Sadly, the Sandman never enters Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ trailer. While this choice was likely made to keep the trailer’s focus on Lilith, the game’s main villain, it feels like a missed opportunity to leave Sandman out, as he would present multiple storytelling and gameplay possibilities. Sandman isn’t confirmed to appear in Midnight Suns’ roster of villains for now, but there is a possibility that he could. While Hydra has been confirmed to feature heavily as one of the game’s main villain factions, not many individual villains have been shown off, with much of its story still being kept under wraps.

On the other hand, quite a few playable heroes did make an appearance in the Midnight Suns trailer and subsequent gameplay footage. The roster of heroes focuses especially on characters with a supernatural connection in the comics and features a mixture between popular favorites like Doctor Strange, Blade, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel, along with lesser-known Marvel characters like Magik and Nico Minoru. The villains that have been shown seem to be connected to these playable heroes, like Sabretooth and his nemesis, Wolverine. While Sandman may not have the supernatural connection that many of Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ heroes and villains have, there is still a lot that he could add gameplay-wise.

What Sandman Could Bring To Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Flint Marko, aka Sandman, first debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #4 in 1963. Marko gains his powers when he comes into contact with irradiated sand at a nuclear testing site. His body bonds with the sand, giving him the power to reform himself from grains of sand. Sandman has since been a mainstay amongst Spider-Man’s gallery of rogues, and was even one of the founding members of the Sinister Six. While Spider-Man has not been confirmed to be a playable character in Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Sandman could make for a great nemesis for him if he were. His ability to reform his body using sand grains could give him an interesting range of offensive and defensive cards, and could also include environmental effects. For instance, if Sandman were to be located in a sandy environment, he could regenerate health or grow his body and become more powerful. On the flipside, if he came into contact with water, his body could solidify and slow him down.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns could also benefit from Sandman’s resurgent presence on the big screen, after it was announced that he would appear in the upcoming film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Despite the character’s popularity, surprisingly few games have utilized him – either as his more traditional role as a villain, or as a hero, as Sandman reformed his ways for a lengthy period in the comics. While he appeared as an early-game boss in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, he still has yet to appear as a villain in Insomniac’s Spider-Man series. In any case, an appearance in Marvel’s Midnight Suns could be the perfect opportunity to let players battle it out with the iconic Spider-Man foe, and potentially place the character on a path for more video games.
