Marvels Most Powerful Avenger Has Finally Returned

Warning: SPOILERS for Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda #1

The Avengers have faced incredible threats over the years, but there’s one they never stood a chance of defeating. Thankfully, he decided to leave Earth without a fight. But now that he’s returned–with a dark, villainous mission–Marvel’s Universe may be in serious danger.

When Black Panther debuted his Agents of Wakanda in The Avengers #12, it seemed a long overdue idea: as the smartest, most peaceful, and technologically advanced leader on planet Earth, why wouldn’t T’Challa lead the new version of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Unfortunately, fans didn’t get much time with the team before The War of The Realms broke out. But now they’ve returned in their very own series, with Black Panther and The Agents of Wakanda #1 throwing them into the deep end. Their first assignment? The return of The Sentry… and he’s not happy.

There’s a good chance that casual Marvel Comics fans may not be too familiar with The Sentry, formerly known as Robert Reynolds. His origin story is simple enough, born of a project following in the footsteps of those which produced Captain America and Wolverine. He was imbued with powers easily on par with DC’s Superman, but over time those powers escalated beyond science, beyond magic, even beyond time. And like all godlike heroes who gain omnipotence in a comic book universe, he turned evil. Which makes his sudden return to the town of Pawhuska, Oklahoma a problem for the entire planet.

Before he turned bad, The Sentry fought as an Avenger on the side of good, even using his godlike abilities and gifts to support Iron Man during the superhero Civil War. But as dark thought and tendencies grew within The Sentry, the other heroes eventually learned the truth: the darkness was the doing of a being called The Void–basically an evil, mirror image contained within The Sentry. When the hero chose to merge with The Void, his powers were even more amplified, easily making him the most powerful human in the Marvel Universe. Which is why his return in Agents of Wakanda is so worrying.

When the source of the dark energy spike in Pawhuska is revealed to be The Sentry, he’s actually wearing the red-colored suit and sporting the black hair of The Void. When The Sentry was last faced with the Avengers in 2018, his good/evil alignment was completely unclear, choosing to head off into space rather than fight the heroes (who stood no chance against him). Now that he’s back and tormenting the residents of a small town, filling the comic’s titular heroes’ heads with dark thoughts… it seems The Void is once again in charge.
