Marvels New Eternals Tease Potential MCU Conflict With XMen

Warning! Spoilers for Eternals: Celestia #1 by Marvel Comics below

If the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever wants to set up a conflict between the Eternals and the X-Men, a new comic just provided perfect source material to adapt. In Eternals: Celestia #1 by Marvel Comics, Ajak and Makkari go on pilgrimage to find the corpse of the Celestial that the Avengers have turned into a home base. Along the way, a past conflict with the X-Men is brought up, setting up future tension between the two groups.

The Dreaming Celestial is one of the strongest Celestials in the Marvel Universe – who was imprisoned for eons after he noticed other Celestials breaking orders when dealing with Deviants on Earth. In the modern-day, the Dreaming Celestial awoke and chose the speedster Makkari to be his prophet. Unfortunately, the Celestial would later be tampered with by the High Evolutionary and killed by the Exterminators. Now, Marvel Comics is revisiting the death of the Dreaming Celestial and reveals the Eternals haven’t forgotten about the X-Men’s role in it.

In Eternals: Celestia #1 by Kieron Gillen, Kei Zama, John Livesay, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles, Ajak struggles with the Celestials leaving the Eternals after she served the powerful Gods for nearly a million years. After talking with Makkari, the pair decide to visit The Progenitor, a hollowed-out Celestial who has become the Avengers’ new headquarters. As they journey to the Arctic Circle, Ajak recounts how Makkari became the prophet of the Dreaming Celestial and spoke to her alone. She recalls how the Dreaming Celestial promised a new way of living alongside Deviants, Celestials, and humans alike. However, after Makkari told the Eternals about the new age to come, the X-Men intervened, leading to the Dreaming Celestial getting chopped up for “parts.”

The upcoming Eternals film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will expand on the Celestials and their roles in the universe like no film before it. With the X-Men’s arrival to the MCU coming sooner than later after Marvel regained the rights to use the characters in its properties, the Dreaming Celestial’s demise would be a perfect story to adapt to live-action to create conflict between the X-Men and the Eternals. While the X-Men weren’t directly responsible for the Dreaming Celestial’s death, their conflict with the Exterminators was. The Eternals might not see the nuance between the Exterminators and X-Men and choose to fight both.

The Celestials meant a lot to the Eternals. It’s why it hurt so much when they abandoned them. The cosmic heroes have a right to stand up and fight back after seeing the X-Men’s adversaries destroy the Dreaming Celestial, as well as the Avengers turning the Progenitor into their own base. The foundation has already been laid in the comics if the MCU needs an Eternals vs. X-Men story. Time will tell if it ever happens on the big screen.
